Hot off their first major show, London, Ontario rock band [COFIELD] is slowly but surely building their fan base.
The boys began playing together in the basement of drummer, Tim Grainger's house when the lads were around the age of 13 or 14. At this time the boys were just jamming in the basement, letting the music take them wherever it wanted to. At this time, the band featured three of today's current members. Lead guitar player Ryan Blackwell, rhythm guitarist/backup vocals Tom McIntosh and drummer Tim Grainger formed a fresh new trio of talent. As the guys headed off to high school, they sensed that an opportunity to expand their musical abilities was on the horizon. They started off by playing small Coffee House's at Oakridge High School, working hard to master one or two perfect covers.
One of these covers was of Tom Petty's "Free Fallin'." The trio had worked hard on perfecting the song, but were not quite capable of carrying the song's high notes off vocally. By chance, vocalist Adam Fearnall happened to be at the Coffee House and approached the three about singing with them at their next performance. Slowly but surely, a band began to form out of the four now friends.
As the years skimmed by, COFIELD was stuck in a rut. All members of the band were intensely involved in the school community, and finding practice time was becoming increasingly difficult. Luckily, the four managed to win a gig as house band for an Oakridge talent show, and suddenly had something to work for. With a set deadline and a 6 song feature, COFIELD began some of their most consistent practicing ever. The band pulled things together and performed a generally well received set of covers and originals at this event.
Upon the completion of this event, the band drifted apart musically. The friendship of the four musicians was never stronger, but finding time to practice was once again a challenge.
But at the beginning of the 2007 school year, the boys decided to focus much more on the band. Their first step was to bring in bassist Ryan Gravelle. He joined the original four members and they set about writing original material. Unfortunately, the writing process did not go particularly smoothly and once again the band stalled. However, as 2008 hit, the boys got a break.
News of a regional Scouting Jamboree reached the boys and they discovered that the camp was looking for a band. Eager for something to motivate a consistent practice schedule, the boys signed on and agreed to play a 3 hour outdoor concert at Camp Timken.
As the band began intensive practicing for the Timken show, they were offered a return gig as the house band at the same Oakridge talent show they had played the year before. Now, with two shows to aim for the band practiced with renewed intensity.
Both show turned out to be tremendous successes. The band played tighter than ever before and learned much about performing live in the process.
Excitement from these two shows has inspired the band to continue booking shows and writing music. Now more than ever [COFIELD] is ready to take a shot. With three more shows already booked, this band is moving consistently forward.
In recent weeks, the boys have begun laying the groundwork for a shot at a debut EP and will begin writing for this in the near future.
