Fifteen year old, Canadian singer/songwriter Elyse Simpson uses lyrics and musicality to reflect a mature retrospection on life, filled with iconic emotions and sensitive visual imagery. Her continually expanding musical work is an eclectic fusion of folk, rock and blues supported by well developed melody lines with strong lyrical content.
A Grade 10 Honor student at Iroquois High School (Oakville, Ontario, Canada), Elyse’s folk rock style is influenced by artists such as The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Waits, The Beatles, Leonard Cohen and Gregory and the Hawk. Combining powerful vocals with gentle keyboards and up tempo guitar streams, her musical style is free and diverse.
Phrases such as “Inanimate circles that kiss on the fringe” (Carousel) or “You’re trying to paint blue but it’s coming up red”(Straw, Bricks and Lead) conjure personal responses from the listener but are indeed private confessions from Elyse. Articulate, creative and methodical in her development, Elyse’s explanations of her music are as interesting as the music itself. Elyse comments, “I write to express inexpressible feelings.”
