My name is Matt Read from Aurora, Ontario, North of Toronto and i’ve been rapping and into hip hop since Jay-z’s blueprint came out. I started writing rhymes because it was a way to release what I was feeling without having the proper outlet. At the time, the September 11th attacks had occured and it was an easy way to describe the anger and other emotions i was going through. I still write and make music to deal with things that are prevolent on in my life, just on a more relatable level. During high school i developed an eclectic taste for music including: Classic Rock, Folk, Punk Rock, and the love for hip hop grew. However, hip hop had become the egocentric, money lusting industry that it is today. Unfortunatly i missed out on the “old school”, which i currently am in constant search for now. Musicians and bands like a “a tribe called quest”, “Wu-tang Clan”, “Gangstarr”, and “Nas” were overally lost in my growth as an artist. Even though a lot of the best hip hop influences didnt shape Ruph Regimen; Ruph Regimen represents the fight against the norm, believing in yourself, and the grind against mainstream society. My rap name derives from my nickname Reggie, and hints of philosophies i carry myself by. For example a Regimen is a routine you go through to get something done or achieve something. The name Ruph Regimen was developed 5 years after i started rhyming, it was no smooth process.
In 2007 I enrolled at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario. The hip hop scene was undeveloped as was my style and rap game. Looking back on my three years in business school, I would have been better off studying more than rapping since I dropped out. However, in retrospect the business world is more competitive than i care to deal with in the first place. In 2008 I met a guy named Matt Lee who was in the same type of musical learning curve as me except he made beats too. We recorded my first song called “chronic problems” that year and did other projects until the summer of 2009 when we put together my record “ Nowhere but Right Here”. I created my own artwork with highschool photoshop knowledge and have been sending it out during my year off. Next year I am going to Guelph for a more manageable and less cutthroat diploma., but i will never lose the love and ambition for hip hop.
In regards to the hip hop industry, I understand the probabilities of success and failure, but im content with where hip hop has gotten me to date. With every new artist I relate from the past to the present, will develop Ruph Regimen which in essence is what a “Regimen” is.
