Inspired by the eccentricities of Lee Mavers, Shawn Stibbards formed "Fiction" in the fall of 1997 with fellow songwriters and bedroom recluses Drew Owen and Edward Suderman. The three had eclectic tastes, and not surprisingly the group's sound was a bizarre amalgamate of 60's pop and new wave. For the next three years they played at a variety of venues, everything from the 1999 Health Inspectors' Christmas Dinner to an illegal street performance in the West End. In January 2002 Stibbards took a break from "Fiction" to form "The Engaged" with Mar Sellars. The group had a rougher sound than "Fiction." After playing a handful of gigs the group disintegrated in November. Stibbards recently began playing and recording again with new musicians and new material. The new material he is writing synthesises the hook-laden catchiness of "Fiction's" material with the primal drive of "The Engaged."
