The vast diversity of each song, provides a little something for every listener. In 2008, Soundstem found themselves in the top 10 on 99.3 the Fox Vancouver Seeds contest.
Soundstem's songs are receiving great attention overseas and featured in many Extreme Sports DVD's by Award -winning Action film Director Thomas Opre. The much anticipated sophomore release "Tomorrow Can Wait" is the follow up to the successful self titled debut album, and was dropped April 29th 2011 with rave reviews. Soundstem will be doing a cross Canada tour this summer and just might be coming to a city near you!!
Randy ... Hailing from small town Saskatchewan, Randy started playing guitar at age 12 before picking up the bass a few years later to join a local band. Numerous live shows followed throughout high school and after graduating, he attended the Red Deer College Performing Arts program in 2002 where he studied Jazz Bass. In 2004 he moved to Vancouver, B.C. and co-founded Soundstem with Doran Vass.
Some of his influences include Victor Wooten (Bela Fleck), Flea (RHCP), Michael Anthony (VH/Chickenfoot) and Robert DeLeo (STP) which are all evident in his playing style.
Touring has taken him all across Canada and into the States and plans to do the same with Soundstem are currently in the works.
*Randy plays Warwick and Yamaha Basses with Ampeg bass rigs.*
Doran... Doran’s musical travels started on the piano at age 6 followed shortly after by alto sax. It was his older brother who brought a guitar home from school one day that really opened his eyes to ROCK!!
Due to the fact that his older brother found the guitar first his mother made him take up bass so they could form a band which they did. At ten years old Doran found himself playing bass in they're first band called White Lightning!
Doran played the bass for the next 15 years before switching to guitar at which point he began singing as well. After selling his prize possession, (his 1972 Oldsmobile 442) he used the money to buy a Roland Workstation and began writing songs. Heavily influenced by his Idol Mr.. Zakk Wylde, Doran has written over 60 songs and two full length albums and now finds himself fronting the band Soundstem with his eye firmly locked on success!!
Doran prefers to play Gibson guitars Boss pedals Marshall Amplification and Sennheiser wireless systems..
Lawrence ... Lawrence Dumont (guitars), has drawn inspiration from Vancouver's Blues scene. He plays a legato style, like Satriani with the aggressive edge of Hammet, focusing on speed and technique. Lawrence prefers to play PRS and Parker guitars with Messa Amplification.
Jay Lee ... Born and raised in Regina Sk, Jay Lee began performing on stage from a very young age. Starting with a Kindergarden production of "The Three Bears" Jay decided right there that he belonged on a stage. Throughout his childhood years he became very active in both acting and musical roles. After moving to Calgary during his teenage years, Jay began teaching himself to drum after finding an old drum set in the back of the music room at school. He picked up the acoustic guitar a few years later in order to start writing his own music, and has since been involved with numerous recording and touring projects ranging from soft acoustic folk rock, all the way to extreme heavy metal.
Finally in early 2011 he made his way out to the west coast to join up with the Soundstem guys to fill the ever important "Timekeeper" role for the group. Some of Jay's drumming influences include Chris Adler (Lamb Of God), Lars Ulrich (Metallica), Joey Jordison (Slipknot), and Jordan Mancino (As I Lay Dying).
"I feel like one of my feet is cut off if I don't have two bass drums to play" exclaims Jay.. and it definitely shows in his playing style.
Jay beats on Pearl drums with Ahead drum sticks, Demon Drive pedals, and prefers Saluda Cymbals
