If Alicia Keys and Glenn Danzig were to front a still “Unplugged” Nirvana the result would be Split Crooked. With simple song structures and instant sing-along catchy hooks coupled with powerful drumming and memorable, driving bass lines, Split Crooked is carving an as yet untouched niche in the Canadian Alternative Rock market.
Taking their cue from, and influenced by everything from old-school and the latest R & B hits, to Classic Rock circa late-70s bass-driven grooves, mid-80s Pop landscape, early-90s Hip Hop beats, and mid-90s to today’s post-Grunge, Split Crooked is a magnificent amalgamation; a testament to timelessness, hence the title and artwork from their new independently released album Sense of Now, available by contacting the band as of January 28, 2012.
Every song on Sense of Now was written and arranged by Split Crooked and was achieved while remaining as independent as a band can get, with no outside help in performing, recording, producing, and compiling the 9 tracks on Sense of Now, except three lead guitar tracks performed by friends of the band. The artwork was also conceived of and executed by the band members themselves.
Vocalist/Guitarist Randy Sonnichsen, formerly of Winnipeg band Sir Noble began putting together Split Crooked after teaching himself his own simple guitar style to open his song-writing and to realize his ambitions of reaching as many people as possible with his honest and direct lyrics. The rest of Split Crooked, the 3-Wheeler team of Bassist Jared Wheeler, Vocalist Marie Wheeler, and Drummer/Producer Chris Wheeler comes from a diverse musical background: Jared is the former bass player of thrash/punk costumed maniacs Igor and the Skindiggers, Marie was a featured dancer and actress in the music video for “Nachana ve Nachana” by Bollywood Hip Hop star ishQ Bector, and Chris is the sole owner/operator of CruHouse Studio in Winnipeg.
Geoff Currier of the Nighthawk on CJOB 680 AM in Winnipeg complimented the band greatly by saying during a recent interview discussing digital music recording that Sense of Now feels like it was recorded live off the floor, which was one of the goals in mixing the album. Currier’s praise acknowledged the difficulties in today’s musical landscape for replicating an album on stage, a task which Split Crooked accomplishes.
Split Crooked aims to take their live show on the road this summer and will be touring Canada in 2012, bringing Sense of Now to as many fans as possible in their drive for reaching the ears and hearts of everyone everywhere.
