The Unrepentant

“We grew up listening to punk,” say guitarist and lead vocalist Maxwell Omen, bassist Vendetta Jones and drummer Gus. Hence the need for a small change. Generally unhappy and uninspired by the direction of their former band, hardcore/metal quartet Rufkut, the three boys formed a new band: The Unrepentant. While Rufkut’s lead singer, Jacob Goodnight, pursued a desire to continue in hardcore music with Kiel, Wisconsin’s To Wed, Maxwell, Vendetta and Gus went back to their roots. What was born was an unforgiving and plentiful helping of punk rock—as the name suggests—much in the same vein as punk legends Green Day. “We just got tired of the screaming, honestly,” says Maxwell. “We didn’t want to contribute to that noise pollution anymore.” While in Rufkut, the boys started to notice that quasi-out-of-genre punk songs like “Psycho Bitch” and “Designer Drugs and Dreams” got a much more positive crowd reaction in comparison to their heavier staples. “[Rufkut] played a battle of the bands at the Rave in Milwaukee once, and the biggest crowd reaction was for ‘Psycho Bitch,’” says Vendetta. “You didn’t have to be a genius to figure out what the majority of the people wanted to hear. It just so happens, that was more along the lines of what we really wanted to play.” Maxwell had been working on punk songs while in Rufkut and had been saving them for the right band. He asked Gus and Vendetta if they would be interested in working on a side project, and the two both agreed immediately. Thus, the Unrepentant was formed.
