Brendan Kelly is a new, emerging, Canadian Singer/Songwriter from Edmonton, Alberta. He began singing and songwriting in 2006. His sound is a mix of classic rock'n'roll and alternative with blues undertones. He has been compared to that of The Black Crowes, Jamiroquai, Maroon 5 and Colin James.
"In the beginning I would practice anywhere from 8-11 hours a day and about half of that I spend writing. Most of my material would be typical blues songs because that's the only thing I had trained my voice to sing along with while I played guitar and it seemed to come naturally to me. "
As Brendan's ability progressed, he took an avid interest in bands such as U2, Van Halen and Aerosmith.
"I was always really into music. I grew up around a lot of classic rock. Hendrix to AC/DC, Phil Collins to Elton John. My family's musical taste really rubbed off on me, but I got into the music even more after picking up the guitar. I felt like I appreciated it more because I understood what it took to play like that and I could learn new ways of exploring my guitar's sound and overall a different style of songwriting."
While developing his own style, Brendan was still strongly influenced by the blues. His favorite artist, Colin James, became a major focal point.
" I identified with Colin James' music at a young age. He has so much talent and raw emotion while at the same time he's terrifically bluesy. It inspired me to want to become an artist like that. I'll always be someone who puts everything into every song. How I write it. How I sing it. How I perform it. I won't hold anything back."
.
In 2011, Brendan Kelly released his first EP which was recorded at Homestead Recordings in Edmonton, Alberta with multi-award winning producer Barry Allen.
"I hope to show that I have a very versatile and unique sound that is all my own with this EP. Ultimately, my goal is to finish a full length album and see where it all takes me. I really want to share my music with everyone and have them enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoy making it."
Already with success in 2011, Brendan released his EP on two local public access radio stations, CKUA (94.9) and CJSR (88.5), as well as having performed at various venues around Edmonton and Area.
"I've played for crowds big and small, and I'm getting my stuff out there. It's all constantly pushing me forward. I'm continually growing and becoming an even better artist."
Currently, Brendan is looking towards being signed to a record label and is continuing to perform locally, provincially or nationally. His drive and ambition will prove to be an unstoppable path to success.
