In regards to the July 18th show at the El Mocambo:
I don’t think I needed to hear these bands to know that their music is probably better than your critics. If I was a listener reading this review (and not having listened to the bands), I wouldn’t know why the Overtones we’re ok to listen to. If I only like metal, then ok to listen to for me would be something heavy, but for all I know, this was an acoustic set. I don’t know if Dre is a rapper or a rocker. If you saw him twice, I think you’d have more to say than to mention the set was the same. I don’t know how good his set was or what it even sounded like. No/Exit rocked the crowd with some acid jazz right? Or was it ska? Must have been some trip hop.
“what i like or write about... it'll be the next big thing.” I guess all these bands mentioned here are going to be the next big things…
Half the indie critics I’ve read are purposely dry. It’s a new trend (f.y.i. if it’s a trend, it means you're not original). If you treat most things as “blah” then it makes the critic seem more important than the music/ians, and makes it seem like his/her opinion is worth listening to. Any wary reader will see right through this. It only works once you’ve created a reputation for yourself. That means you have to give any one who is reading your review an idea of what the bands sound like, and if they are good or bad, and WHY. When you can give people a reason to trust your judgement, then that is when you can become reputable.
If you’re trying to promote yourself by putting in small reviews on every couple local shows, you might wanna do justice to yourself and to the bands by elaborating on how and why you think something was good or bad. If you don’t validate your opinion, then it doesn’t matter to anyone but you. If you’re going to critic a band, then a reader needs to be able to know if they are worth listening to before they listen to them. I must say your myspace reviews are better, but on your The Wooden Sky review: “The indie sound with country with cello and some melodic vocals. Well not melodic cause he is a guy but his vocals do sound so familiar”? Come on! It doesn’t take a critic to know that guys can be melodic. In fact, a critic SHOULD know that a guy can be melodic.
