Mortal Soil is an instrumental rock/metal/Straight outta' Compton band from Surrey who have obliterated all the crowds they have played for.
Mortal Soil hit the Supernova stage most recently in March of 2012 for Band on the Run. They have done very well in the past at our shows taking home the wildcard prize for most fan votes TWICE!
Please introduce us to Mortal Soil:
Michael James plays the Guitar, Stefan Grabowski (AKA Smooch) plays the Drums and Tek Leang (MIA - Missing.In.Action.) plays the lead bass.
How did you get your band name and what brought you guys together as a band?
We came together by performing for the Jamaican Festival in Surrey and the name came kind of by fluke and was inspired by a great band's song name.
How long have you been playing together with the current lineup?
For almost 2 years.
If I was to put you on the spot and ask you to define your genre, what would you call it?
Funkgressive! Ooooooo yeeeaaaaaa.
Do you have any major artistic influences?
Mastodon, Tool, Puscifer, Bob Saget, Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Steve Vai, Steve Jobs, Rush, Megadeth, Black Keys, Alice In Chains, Danny Carey, Chris Coleman, Joe Satriani, Chihuahuas, Dr. House, Flea, Les Claypool, Hadrien Feraud.
What is the most rewarding thing about being in a band?
Playing live is really cool, not gonna lie!
What is the hardest part about being in a band?
Dealing with Tek, and getting practice in with a busy schedule.
How did you come across Supernova.com?
Michaels mom found the website.
Do you have a motto or recipe foir putting on a good show?
Always have fun, and don't divide by ZERO.
What is your most memorable moment thus far as a band?
At one of the Supernova performances, during one of the songs, a man in a kilt came up and started to headbang and rock out in front of the stage. It was hilarious and awesome!
What is the funniest/strangest story that you have had as a band?
Probably getting props written on a bus ticket by two girls at a sushi lounge in Vancouver because they had to leave. We thought they were being mean until we read the note haha.
If you had your way, where would you be in 2 years?
Opening for Dave Matthews Band at The Gorge would SICK!
In closing, is there anything else that makes your band unique that new listeners should know?
We are different because we don't have a singer at the moment, but we always seem to make it to the finals of competitions we enter, because of our musical abilities and because each of us creatively enjoy the instruments we play.

Mortal Soil does really well despite not having a lead singer, as they mentioned. This is a band with a dedicated following of family and fans and a band that is going to continue to surge forward. They are one of those acts that truly understand getting out and playing and not letting anything hold them back. If you are looking for a seriously talented and young band to follow and keep an eye on, I can promise you that Mortal Soil is that band. You will never be disappointed!
