My band has made it when...

This is Yesterday

This is Yesterday is a young band out of Pickering who turned heads at this year's Supernova.com Break Your Band qualifier Battle back in November. With a forceful sound that manages to combine metal, hardcore, and some speed infused drums into a high octane eargasm, This is Yesterday has been watching their fanbase grow since hitting the Supernova stage.

We caught up with the boys for an interview while they were practicing in preparation for one of their biggest opportunities to date. This is Yesterday has earned their way into Supernova.com's Break Your Band Finals this January, where they'll be battling on the live stage with the hope of claiming a massive $25,000 development deal.

With such a major show on the horizon, This is Yesterday gave Supernova all the goods on their band's background and hopes for success.

This is Yesterday is:

Andrew “Kitney” Catney: Vocals

Michael Griffin: Bass/ Vocals

Dyllon Martinez: Drums/Beatz

Matt “Metal Gear” Ross: Guitar

Greg Willhelm: Guitar/Vocals

Travis Metzger: Keys/Samples/Vocals

So how did you come together and what got the band to where it is now?

Mike: The band originally started out as a two piece with me and Dyllon, we kinda wanted to do a really electronic metal band (like all electric sounds, drum machines, lots of synths, stuff like that). When our old friend Eric Leblond started jamming with us, we kinda became a 3 piece and left the electronic part out of everything. After a couple of months it just wasn’t working, so Eric left the band, and through a couple of friends we met Greg, Matt and Andrew. Soon after a couple of jams, we brought Travis into the picture.

I guess hard work and just putting everything we got into our music is how we got to where we are today. We never let up even when we lost a member, even when we had no hope of finding some new people, we just didn’t give up and everything worked out.

How would you describe your sound?

It’s pretty next; we're like a hybrid baby of Attack Attack, Bring me the Horizon, The Devil Wears Prada, Enter Shikari and Mad Beatz, like Bloody Beetroots, and Angerfist... If those bands had a kid we would be it; told you we're pretty next.

Were not the most unique band, but we love music and we really just do what we like and what we think sounds good.

Where is your favourite place to practice or play?

Dyllon: Mike’s Basement :P

What do you think is the most rewarding thing about being in a band?
Dyllon: Hearing the crowd cheer is what does it for me.

Andrew: First of all, I'm just gonna say all the ladies. Second would being able to do what you love and show the world what you got. * laughs to self *

Matt: I have no idea, honestly I’m clueless.

Greg: Being G.

Mike: Just being able to stand in front of a crowd and throw down and Get Low™ with my little side family, it's golden.

Travis: You get to jam with a bunch of your buddies, all the time.

Was there any particular moment that made you want to pursue music full time?

Dyllon: Hearing a successful breakdown, DUM DULLUM DUM!

Andrew: Metal Music and again - the ladies. * looks away, laughing to self…again *

Matt: I don’t F%#&$^*^& know? Yun? I guess just the love for music.

Greg: Chad Vader.

Mike: Crab core…seriously it's genius. But music is so perfect, so it was a 'need' more than a 'want'.

Travis: When music became the only thing I could think about.

How has your Supernova experience been?

It’s been good, they help you out - they pretty much get you started.

What is the biggest challenge facing ‘new’ artists, in your opinion?

Just getting known, but all the local bands are really respectful and throw down with you. It's just a good scene.

What would be your band’s ‘recipe' for throwing down?

Stay Fresh, and Get Low™.

Where is your favourite place to practice or play?

Dyllon: Mike’s Basement :P

What other artists would you like to tour with?

Mike: Attack Attack for sure, or even just like sick a local band like On Burning Shores.

Andrew: The Crimson Armada.

And if you could go on tour using ANY method of transportation...?

Andrew: A Plane

Ross: Mike’s Car

Dyllon: Nimbus cloud. (FTW!!! :D )

Mike: Gnar van, hearse, or a Stargate.

Greg: A dragon

Travis: ..and a baja car, for sure.

Anything else new listeners should know?

Dyllon: I think most metal bands are hardcore or really funny... We're just kind of next.
