With a knack for contrast,
The Almost Anonymous is a band that sits on the border of melody and mayhem. High speed drums and ferocious chords are mixed with soft, skillful riffs and a variety of unpredictable vocals, creating the high tension energy required of any respectable punk rock outfit.
Despite being relatively young, these high school friends have carved out a decent following, with songs that demonstrate a great understanding of how to utilize each of the artists for maximum impact. Pop punk oriented,
The Almost Anonymous will take their tracks to the big stage on January 23rd, 2010 for Supernova’s
Break Your Band Ottawa Finals!
Since these guys will be counting on fan votes to bring home the grand prize -
a $25,000 Band Development Deal – we thought it might be a good time to get to know
The Almost Anonymous.
So who makes up The Almost Anonymous?
Alex and Bobby are the songwriters, and John and Peter just wing it really. We're pretty much The Beatles. Alex James plays guitar and does the main vocals, Bobby Burnett is the lead guitarist and secondary vocals, John beats on the drums, and Peter is our bassist (but we just call him Pete).
We all went to High School together and we noticed that we were all good looking dudes and the music just kind of composed itself.
Good strategy! How would you describe your sound?
Pop punk, with minor hints of brutality.
Was there any particular moment that made you want a career in music?
No not really, except that time when Jesus came down and gave us the songbook. That was a good sign.
Hahaha, so what's the best thing about being in a band?
The freedom in it. It's the life we live and you can definitely hear a part of us in each of the songs. The musical release is much better than any other phenomenon.
What other artists do you look up to?
There's a giant list that honestly will make this interview pretty long. But of course we love the greats like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin,
Blink 182, etc.
Where is your favourite place to practice or play?
In our drummer John's house, because we can be as loud as we can and usually have a ton of friends there - which is always fun.
So what is the biggest challenge facing ‘new’ artists, in your opinion?
LimeWire and the like. Not too many people are keen on paying for things when they aren't forced to; even if someone is on the other end with a paper and pen.
What would be your band’s ‘motto’ for putting on a good show?
"A friend with weed is good indeed." Just Kidding... Actually we stay sober, because honestly it doesn't take much to hurt your ability to perform; you already have a lot of pressure. At least you do at the types of shows we like to play.
If you had to listen to one album on repeat for the rest of your life, what album would it be?
It doesn't really show too much in our music, but the answer is
Sublime's self-titled album.
Nice choice! Is there anything else that new listeners should know?
We love to party, and we have a different sound if you're into variety! Enjoy the tunes!
