My band has made it when...

On the Shoulders of Giants Win Break Your Band!

After much anticipation and excitement, Supernova.com has at last selected the Grand Winner of the Break Your Band $25,000 Development Deal: Ottawa's On the Shoulders of Giants!

These young artists joined the Break Your Band series back in December with their heavy, hardcore punk tracks featuring blistering metal guitar and drum work. The band then killed the Ottawa finals in January, advancing them in to the National Vote with a shot at the $25,000 industry prize.

The fate of the band was then up to the fans, who voted their favourite 5 of 12 finalists to the top for consideration by our panel of industry pros. After much deliberation, On the Shoulders of Giants was selected by our panel as the recipients of $25,000 worth of industry services, advice, expertise and opportunities - amounting to one massive development package to help 'Break the Band' on to the music scene!

Still reeling from their big win, Supernova grabbed a quick interview with the members of On the Shoulders of Giants shortly after they were told the good news (with the band's song Birth of a Hero playing in the background, to set the mood!)

Birth of a Hero - OTSOG

Congrats on the BIG WIN, you guys! How did you first find out about Break Your Band?

When we we're just starting out after getting our bass player Mikey, Nik and Dylan (guitarists) heard about it from some friends who are in other local bands.

Where did your band get its name?

The name comes from the Isaac Newton quote, "If I have seen further, it is only by standing on the shoulders of giants".

How would you describe the music of OTSOG?

We would describe it as a blend of melodic vocals, hardcore guitar riffs,
smashing drums, ear piercing screams and groovy bass lines.

Now that you've won $25,000 of industry support, what are some of your music goals?

We're hoping to meet some people who really enjoy are music and can help us; get exposed, go on tour, even just get us random shows around Ontario and Quebec or maybe even get signed.

Another "goal" we've always had as a band is to open for our favourite band, A Day To Remember :)

What was the best part of your Break Your Band experience?

Gotta be a tie between playing to a huge crowd of friends and strangers, getting tons of exposure, and meeting all of these extremely talented bands who befriend you along the way (Unconscious Encore, Last Day Within, BadNewsForCraig to name a few!)

What was one thing you learned as a band during the Break Your Band experience?

Don't burn your bridges! This has come through for us on many occasions, especially when dealing with show promoters and other bands. Keeping cool and being at least plesant to everyone involved is essential. Shows should be a positive experience, and we always try and keep it that way :)

---

With such wise words and winning attitudes, it's clear that Ottawa's On the Shoulders of Giants have a bright future ahead of them. Supernova will be closely following the band's progress as they step in to the industry and pursue their band development goals and music dreams.

In the meantime, join us in congratulating these young artists by taking a listen to On the Shoulders of Giants - winners of Supernova.com's Break Your Band and a $25,000 Development Deal!

bcd - you obviously don't know the band very well... or have any idea what's going on. OTSOG has been working with us and recently came to Toronto to begin their industry consultations; the band has a new single up on their Supernova.com page, recorded with help from the deal. Check it out :)

How proud we are of On The Shoulders of Giants - to have come such a long way in such a short time; all of the band members are truly dedicated to their music and their friendship, and keeping things real and honest and true. We can't wait to see where this ride goes.
