77Split combines the energy of 4 Winnipeg, Manitoba artists who are just getting their feet wet as a band. With driving punk riffs and melodic vocals, the band’s been compared by fans to the sounds of Blink 182 and Green Day; but they also have over 20 minutes of original material to boast.
Since winning 1st place in Supernova’s Band on the Run series this summer, 77Split seem to be quickly gaining new fans and support from the independent music community. Placing 7th overall in the National vote, 77Split sat down with Supernova for an interview in the wake of their first taste of indie fame
So who makes up the band? Any nicknames?
77Split is Kristian Zoppa - Drums, Jason Cumming - Lead Guitar, Mark Holmes-A-Court - Bass, and Ryan Reimer - Lead Vocals. No one has nicknames because nicknames are dumb.
Lol, yeah sometimes people earn dumb nicknames. What is your band’s history?
We all go to the same school and had nothing to do; and Jason wanted a band so he made a band. Ryan said random shit, and that's how we got our name. We got where we are today by practicing in Kristian`s living room and playing a few shows.
How would you describe your band’s sound?
Pop-punk.
What is the most rewarding thing about being in a band?
Playing shows.
Was there any particular moment or event that made you realize you wanted to pursue music full time?
When we listened to Hot 103 and said we could do better than this stuff.
What is the biggest challenge facing ‘new’ artists, in your opinion?
Getting shows and separating ourselves from the poser bands.
We found Supernova.com through our friends. It is a good way of getting known.
Where is your favourite place to practice or play?
To practice, Kristian`s house; and to play, The Pyramid Cabaret.
What other artists do you look up to?
Greenday, The Network, Foxboro Hottubs, Pinhead Gunpowder, Rancid, Sum 41, Operation Ivy, NOFX, MxPx, Bowling For Soup, Bad Religion, Bad Brains, The Afterbeat, The Buzzcocks, Circlejerks, Lady Gaga, The Used, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance, Queen, Poison, The Ramones, The Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer, period and that's enough.
Is there such a thing as ‘bad’ music? If so, how do you define it?
Yes - People who do it for the money. Money is good though...
Finally, what would be your band’s ‘recipe’ for putting on a good show?
Ryan sits in a corner, Mark gets really nervous, Jason runs around in circles, and Kristian screams at people.
