Break Your Band Winners On the Shoulders of Giants Start Recording

After winning the Supernova.com Break Your Band $25,000 development package, young Ottawa hardcore rockers On the Shoulders of Giants were pretty floored. “We’re all in a state of disbelief right now,” was about all the group could say, as they claimed a massive development package geared towards helping them hit the next level in their music.

From joining the Supernova series in December and killing the Ottawa finals, On the Shoulders of Giants went on to the judging process, only to be selected as the top band and winners of the MASSIVE grand prize: $25,000 worth of industry services, advice, expertise and opportunities to help 'Break the Band'!

It was an opportunity that fell in to their hands just as the band was coming together. “When we we're just starting out after getting our bass player Mikey, guitarist Nik and I heard about it from some friends who are in other local bands,” explained Dylan, the band’s other guitarist. With 6 members and a lot of talent, On the Shoulders of Giants rose through the Supernova series ranks very quickly, gathering tons of new fans along the way.

“We would describe our sound as a blend of melodic vocals, hardcore guitar riffs, smashing drums, ear piercing screams and groovy bass lines.”

On the Shoulders of Giants recently traveled to Supernova’s head offices in Toronto, to meet with a panel of industry insiders to begin the development process. This included legendary talent coaches like Noah Finklestein, Joel Baskin, Zayna Mosam and others. While learning some of the tricks and tribulations of the industry, the band was also set up at Epik Productions for a full studio session and consultation.

One of the first things to come out of the band’s development was this new track, recorded/mastered at Epik, called ‘Line Up to be Broken’ – a powerful entry on to the scene, that is true to the band’s musical style and form. Take a listen!

Catching up with the band for a few minutes between their meetings, we had a chance to chat about their experience with Supernova’s Break Your Band series and their new introduction to the music industry.

So What was the best part of your Break Your Band experience?

Gotta be a tie between playing to a huge crowd of friends and strangers, getting tons of exposure, and meeting all of these extremely talented bands who befriend you along the way (Unconscious Encore, Last Day Within, and to name a few!)

What are some of your goals as a band, now that you have $25,000 of industry support?

We're hoping to meet some people who really enjoy are music and can help us; get exposed, go on tour, even just get us random shows around Ontario and Quebec or maybe even get signed. Another "goal" we've always had as a band is to open for our favourite band, A Day To Remember :)

What was one thing you learned as a band during this competition?

Don't burn your bridges! This has come through for us on many occasions, especially when dealing with show promoters and other bands. Keeping cool and being at least pleasant to everyone involved is essential. Shows should be a positive experience, and we always try and keep it that way :)

We expect to see and hear lots more from this band as they develop both their sound and their stage presence. They’re back in studio at
Epik Productions on August 15th to record a 4 track EP, promising to “throw down 3 tracks, one of which has never been heard outside of OtSoG”. The band also hopes to have a CD release sometime in September or October, and will be playing several dates leading up to a busy fall season.

Supernova.com is proud to support such a motivated and hardworking group of talented new artists as these Break Your Band winners, and we’ll be sure to sit back down with On the Shoulders of Giants as they take their musical careers to the next level this year.

You can check them out LIVE:

Friday August 20th – Carleton Place Youth Center (Ottawa)

Saturday August 21st – Jean Marc Lalonde Arena (Rockland)

Sunday August 22nd – The Rainbow (Ottawa)

… more dates to be announced soon!
