Good for Grapes is a folk-inspired alternative rock band from B.C. whose music career just got a major boost from their fans. After a massive National Vote that asked music fans to pick their favourite artist from the Rogers Battle of the Bands®, Good for Grapes emerged as the Grand Winner; taking a total of $3,500 in cash and a promotional from urMusic!
Playing a show on home turf at Vancouver's Rio Theatre back in February, the band took first place in fan votes earning $1,000 cash and urMusic promo. As a result, they were also entered into the National Vote on Supernova, where thousands of fans across Canada chose Good for Grapes as the clear winner. Since Supernova is dedicated to the discovery and promotion of new talent, it was really exciting to see fans choose such a quality act to win the Rogers Battle of the Bands®.
Proud to award such a talented group of young artists, Supernova grabbed a quick interview with the band's key members to find out how playing the series has affected them and impacted their future in music.
So why did your band originally sign up on Supernova to play a Battle?
We were hesitant at first, having only ever performed in coffee shops and in front of small crowds. However, we decided to take our music out of its element and see where it would take us.
What has been the best part of the experience (besides winning :) ?
The Vancouver show itself was fantastic; we had so much fun playing a big stage. The night of the show was just amazing all together, from the performance to the suspense of it all. Not to mention the fact that [Supernova's] stage crew and theatre staff were incredible.What is one thing you’ve learned as artists/musicians during this experience?
We learned that we shouldn't doubt our music, or our genre. Going into it, we had no expectation of winning - we thought of it as the first step. You can imagine the surprise and awesomeness we felt as they called our name as winners.
Totally! What do you plan to do with the $3,500 you’ve won?
With the money, we plan to fund the production of our 6 song EP which is being released April. 15 on iTunes. We're also intending to buy new sound equipment for the band: no more rentals!
Any advice to bands/artists who are thinking of signing up for the next Supernova Battle?
Don't ever doubt the potential of your music, and don't be scared to put yourself out there. Sign up and try it out. Worst case scenario, you get to play an extremely fun show with your band-mates.
