My band has made it when...

Featuring Torrent

Formed in 2007, Torrent is a rock metal band who takes pride in putting on a killer live performance. This foursome from Kleinburg, Ontario has the talent to turn heads, and has done a great job of combining both powerful and melodic rock elements. With FIVE Supernova performances under their belt, Torrent is quickly earning a reputation for bringing the party to independent music fans.

Despite their relatively young ages, Torrent demonstrates a great attitude towards their music and their fans. Playing most recently at Supernova's Band on the Run to the UK qualifier, Torrent has now secured a spot at the upcoming Finals. Taking place on June 17th at Toronto's Sound Academy, the upcoming gig could end up sending them to the UK to play London's O2 arena!

Before the big event, we managed to grab a quick interview with the band so fans can learn a little bit more about what's behind the 'Torrent of music'...

Hey guys, can you explain how each of you fit into the band?

Brant Garratt aka B - Ron (Rhythm guitar and Vocals) is very musical, creative and his great opinions lead the band.

Stephen Flesch aka Steve-O (Bass player) has an organized mentality and keeps the band on track and moving smoothly at all times.

Michael Venditti aka Mikey (Lead guitar player) keeps the band lightened up with his jokes and is very creative in making songs.

Karan Chauhan aka K-Dot, Disaster (Drummer) has impeccable rhythm that keeps the band on time; and he's the nice guy of the band.

Cool, so what is your band’s history?

We acquired their name one day on a very wet spring evening. As the heavy storm hit, one band member yelled out jokingly: "It looks like a torrential downpour!" The word "torrential" seemed interesting since we were currently searching for a band name. For short, we used Torrent; and to this day that's what we're known as. The band formed in 2007 with the help of our former Elementary School music teacher, Mrs. Caldwell. We played successfully together until the summer of 2008 when our drummer left the school. We did find another drummer at our new highschool, and the band continued to practiced on and off, played several successful gigs, broke up, and started up again in 2010.

Now, Torrent has been practicing heavily and have mastered many new songs both covers and originals. The band is playing better than ever!

What is the most rewarding thing about being in a band?

The feeling you get when you've just accomplished the feat of playing an amazing show. Also, the completion of a new original and playing it back is priceless.

How would you describe your band’s sound?

We have a raunchy hard rock sound; but at the same time a softer more melodic side. The band likes ballads. However, the band also has recently acquired a more heavy, metal side. To sum us up, we have a wider range of genres than the average teenage band and we are proud of that.

What other artists do you look up to?

Alter Bridge, Metallica, Dream Theater, Staind, Three Doors Down, Avenged Sevenfold, John Petrucci...

What is the biggest challenge facing ‘new’ artists, in your opinion?

Our genre that we play isn't listened to as frequently as we'd like. Most teenagers have switched towards hip hop and rap whereas our band is quite the contrary. However, we believe our music has the potential to appeal to younger people.

How did your band find Supernova?

We found out from a fellow high school band. We think Supernova provides great opportunities for young new bands to be noticed and get themselves out there. We have nothing but good things to say about Supernova.

What would be your band’s ‘motto’ or ‘recipe’ for putting on a good show?

To be ourselves, feel the music and have a good time. Our style is more complex than the average band; not that typical punk 3-chord [sound]. We try to vary our genres and [create] reasonably theoretically complex music.

Where is your favourite place to practice or play?

The Sound Academy.

Can't wait to see you there! Lastly, do you think there's such a thing as ‘bad’ music?

All music is good to different people. Anything can appeal to the ear of the beholder.
