The Observance is a new "no frills" punk rock band from Winnipeg, with a frustratingly small amount of music online. They are mainly out to have a good time but make no mistake; this band is a killer live act with a ton of talent. Taking first place and winning recording time at the recent HYSTERIA 2011 Battle, the band is preparing material that we know will be worth the wait.
The Observance has been playing on the Supernova stage for several months, gaining tons of new fans from across Canada in the process. They took the fan choice Wildcard prize at this summer’s Band on the Run Battle, at which point we grabbed an interview to get to know the band a little better...
We don't have a set sound really, we play a fairly wide range that will make everyone happy.
Hmm.. ok so what's the story behind the name, "The Observance"?
The name came to use when we were all driving in a car and a rock hit the windshield.
Braden then said, "That was a rock," and Evan said, "You're observant," [sarcastically of course] and then was like, "we are all observant, we are observance." ...trying to make it plural. We ended up with The Observance.
Well it works! How did your band find Supernova?
Braden found it from previous explorations and signed us up! We would say it's a great site to check out if you're in to music.
What is the biggest challenge facing ‘new’ artists, in your opinion?
We don't really feel as if we are facing anybody; we are just entertaining people.
A good attitude... What is your most memorable moment (so far) as a band?
Probably all our random conversations at Tim Hortons.
Where is your favourite place to practice or play?
All our practices have been in Braden's garage and it's been great.
What's your motto for putting on a good show?
Go out there and just have a good time, have energy and interact with the crowd.
Do you think there is such a thing as ‘bad’ music?
There isn't "bad music" ...it's more music that is not just quite your own style.
Anything else that new listeners should know?
We have this little red man who is a magnet that is stuck on to an amp during all our shows, I guess you could call him our "mascot".
