My band has made it when...

Introducing Over the Edge

Over the Edge is a 4-piece rock, alternative band from Scarborough, Ontario. Formed last year, they have only begun to write music, but have carved out a nice musical niche. The band has also earned a reputation for a killer live show, with an energy that borders punk and grunge. Having played only a handful of gigs across Ontario, Over the Edge has quickly gained popularity among fans – especially when competing on our stage.

Over the Edge first joined Supernova for the Hysteria series this fall, playing legendary stages like the Sound Academy and the El Mocambo where they grabbed 2nd place and recording time. Returning for the Toronto Showdown and HYSTERIA Finals, the band has continued to develop their sound and their fan base. They have earned participation prizes at almost every event, and were recently invited to the Coalition Showcase this February in Toronto.

Seeing as this young band has a lot going on (but not a lot of info up online,) we grabbed an interview with the guys from Over the Edge to help better introduce them to their fans.

Introducing Over the Edge:

Calvin Eberts: Vocals & Rhythm guitar
(writes guitar, lyrics, melodies)

Aaron Ram: Lead Guitar (writes guitar)

Jack Jensen: Drums

Ryley Chorowiec: Bass Guitar

So what's the story behind your band?

We have only played a few live concerts as a band! We have all played before but not as Over the Edge. We got our name just from a brainstorm really... Not too much to that.

How do you describe your genre?

Our band plays a Alternative punk rock, as well as rock.

Do you consider any other Artists to be mentors?

Mentor.. I don't really know. But definitely idols. Green Day is one of our biggest idols. How they came from nothing, high school drop outs, to suddenly HUGE! An icon of the world.

Definitely... so what is it about being in a band that makes it rewarding for you?

Being in a band helps us all forget about the homework, stress, etc. It lets us do something and show our emotion through something we all love!

So far, what is your best memory as a band?

Our most memorable moment so far would be playing the El Mocambo and having SO MANY fans out to support us! It was a great feeling!

How did your band find Supernova?

I found Supernova from a friend. I would tell all bands starting out to get with Supernova because before you start making money playing, you have to have experience. Supernova gives you experience.

What is the biggest challenge facing ‘new’ artists?

The only challenge really is trying to 'beat' other peoples music. Because sometimes some people may not like us, but we have to stay strong and keep going to be the best we can be.

So what would be your ‘recipe’ for putting on a good show?

STAGE PRESENCE! and IMPROVISATION! We always have a choreographed set, with all our moves and jumps etc. People love when bands jump around and INTERACT with the crowd! And if anyone makes a mistake everyone already knows what to do!

Where is your favourite place to play?

We play at my house and at a studio which is only a 5 minute walk from my area! And we get all the time in the world... Gives me time to yell at everyone! lol and for everyone to yell at me!

In your mind, is there such a thing as ‘bad’ music?

There is no such thing as 'Bad' music. But there is such a thing as not liking or even hating a piece of music. All music should come from the soul and therefore it always means something to someone; but that doesn't mean everyone will like it! Just like some of the songs I write, I don't even like! But the lyrics and the sound still have very big meaning to me.

Good answer. Is there anything else about
Over the Edge that we should know?

There is not too much. My guitarist and I are kind of religious, we like to make pre-performance prayers. And we have our chant all of our fans know which is
just simply: O. T .E , O.T.E.!

You can catch Over the Edge LIVE at the Coalition Showcase on Saturday February 18th, 2012 in Toronto. All of the band's most recent gigs will culminate in this massive performance in front of some of Canada's top industry talent scouts... come join the party and be a part of indie music history!

In the meantime check out the band's music, and if you like what you've heard then you might want to try tossing the band a vote in the Hysteria Wildcard! Also, be sure to leave a comment and let the band know what you think of their tunes.
