Torture is a combination thrash and breakdown metal band from Peterborough, Ontario. With 4 precision musicians behind the wheel, this band drives their music home with a hard hitting, high energy determination. In their own words, Torture was “bound by fate to come together as a band, [to] be humanity’s soundtrack for the demise of the cruel and corrupted world that we live in.” And if you think this interview sounds intense, you should see them LIVE.
Supernova fans had the chance to witness Torture in action at the HYSTERIA series this Fall. The band put on a killer performance at the Red Dog Tavern which saw them grab the fan-voted Wildcard prize in Battle. Since then, the band has continued to work on honing their music to perfection and one of their major goals is working to find a recording deal.
Suffice it to say that if you’re a fan of metal and the attitude that goes with it, you’re probably going to be a fan...
Introducing Torture:
Sid Torture – Vocals. Received nick name ten years earlier at an underground street punk show, Sid “MF” Vicious. I placed someone through a wall and another through a bass drum all due to holding my place dead center in the pit. Torture was added as being the voice of TORTURE.
Josh "Josh Wretch" Carr – Bass. His dirty 6 string to hell bass playing is so good it can be described as nothing less than wretched.
Tim "Timmy" Evans – Guitar. Nickname based on the South Park Character.
Adam Lunn "Lunner - Drums.
So what is the history behind your band?
the band started about 5 years earlier with Lunner being the catalyst as the drummer of Xecution. He then recruited Timmy and another guitarist from the now defunct Cause and Effect. Sid was new to the area coming from Toronto and brought a new dynamic vocal styling that he had created within some minimalist bands in the punk, metal, gothic scenes. In September, 2011, we exited the bassist and picked up Josh Wretch, a super talented bass player, to fill the missing void.
We got where we are today as a band through dedication and perseverance. Like all bands, we have had our share of struggles, both musical and personal. But the fact is, metal is what gives us hope and a path to a better existence. Without it I am sure we all could succeed, but the need and call for the passion that is our music helps us through all the struggles in life; and helps us spread the underbelly of society to all.
Wow, that’s pretty deep. So what is the meaning behind the name?
We played with many different names for about 4 months but nothing stuck, then the word Torture came to describe the beauty in disgust we truly are. To us as a whole Torture is suffering for what you believe in, it evokes ghoulish imagery of true reality that all must face, it is the sinister darkness that all must walk through to find their own truth, and to us it’s the honest truth that we speak about through our music and words; like it or not TORTURE is reality.
Without TORTURE, you would never know the truth only what is fed to you by spoon, at the very least we will force you to think about the filth that does exist in our world. We were bound by fate to come together as a band. TORTURE would be humanity’s soundtrack for its demise of the cruel and corrupted world that we live in.
It sounds like there's a lot of thought behind your music; how would you describe your sound?
Our sound is a mix of all that is good in metal we don’t really fall under one umbrella of metal we make music that is not fitted. That being said, we have influences so wide and varied between us all that it would probably amaze most. Blended, we have the East Coast Thrash sound mixed with some Doom with and undertone of skin crawling creep accents from black and death metal.
Is there any other Artist who you’d consider a ‘mentor’?
Slayer is a big one the way they test boundaries and cross over in the areas of the mind that are normally ignored. Bolt Thrower and any band that stays true and brutal to them selves and is able to get their music out there amongst the entire mainstream. We are all metal heads ourselves and pull influences from multiple sources across the globe.
So as a metal head, what is the most rewarding thing about being in a band?
Reaching out to those who have never being considered reachable. As most metal heads know the truth is you are excluded from society norms early in life. As you get older you begin with the harassment by authority figures as racism and homophobia are not the only types of segregation, try being a metal head surrounded by the rich and you will truly feel oppression. TORTURE feels like there is always a chance for a revolution or at least a riot. In so we are doing what we love to do and thrilling a live audience. I would have to say that the most rewarding thing about being in a band is not only the reward of doing what you love to do day in and day out, but all reactions of the fans - that’s what it’s really all about.
What is your most memorable moment (so far)?
Our first ever show, that was so very long ago now, the crowd reaction was amazing. We crafted our skill for 2 years before looking to play any show, we had done right by waiting it was a deadly feeling.
At our second show, I (Sid Torture) jumped into the pit with the mic and chord... I ended up sending this one person flying through the air with an elbow to the face; but as they were going to land they yanked on the chord propelling the mic like a bungee chord in to my lip. I bled like a fish and have a permanent scar from that show; it was sweet. I would have to say just performing and being on stage is memorable.
That's pretty sweet. What do you find most challenging about being a new artist?
Making the rest of the world know that pop music and pop metal itself is receiving the majority of air play and it is a lot of useless fluff. That you can have your message and voice heard without adding the candy coating to every song. Not changing who you are for the almighty record deal and staying true to your self.
Well put. How did you find Supernova?
The coordination itself is owed to a great friend who helped set us up with Supernova at our last show: Johannes Karl Mueller. He introduced us to Michelle Cooney and as the story goes, the rest is history. Supernova will help you to get the exposure you want. They don’t impede you from getting your foot in the door; they give you the option to put your foot there if you want it bad enough. And we often get crazy determined bands like yourself stepping up. What else makes Torture unique that fans should know?
We use skill and creativity in everything we do, and do not limit ourselves to musical rules but create new sounds using the rules as a point of reference to not recreate. As far as mascots go, the mad doctor with the blade seems to be Brent Wilson, the band’s visual artist and co-creation to our sound. No better than a psychotic mad asylum doctor to teach everyone about the suffering that exists and that is endured by all.
Finally, fans love watching you live on stage... What is your trick to putting on an amazing show?
Leave everyone felling our pain, our blood, and our sweat to a dawn of a new era in the world; and never forget to unleash a torturous wrath, as we destroy the stage but always remember keep it entertaining and have fun with the crowd.
Epic. Be sure to check out the band's profile to hear more of their tunes!
