My band has made it when...

Introducing Clockwork

Clockwork is a band out of Halifax that has a calm cool alternative rock sound fused with soulful lyrics that give the music a really likable personality. With influences like Muse, Rush, and even Rage Against the Machine, this eclectic trio has come out of the gate running. Having recorded their first EP in Nashville, Clockwork brings legitimate music cred, and has been a huge hit on their local scene.

Having played and won 1st place at both their Band on the Run and Summer Meltdown shows, Clockwork is a familiar sound on the Supernova stage. They also returned to rock the Bus Stop Theatre for HYSTERIA this Fall and have since continued building a steady following of passionate fans. With over 4,500 views on their Supernova profile alone, Clockwork has been garnering some serious attention.

This young group of musicians offers more than the average rock band, not only in their bluesy guitar solos or well-honed originals, but also in their focused attitude towards music.

Before they hit the big time, Supernova grabbed the chance for an interview…

Introducing Clockwork:

Liam Cyr (19) Lead Vocals and Guitar

Aidan Cyr (14) Drums and Percussion

Joey Jesso (21) Bass and Backing vox

Hey guys, so tell me a bit about how you fit in to the band?

Liam is the main lyricist and frontman for the band... He adds color to the band's heavy drum and bass influence. Aidan, Liam's Little brother, is the drummer and the ladies' man. He's always pushing the band to make songs better. He plays over the top with Joey to make a big sound for only 3 people. Joey is the bass player and backing vocals, and a driving force in the back of the band. Him and Aidan groove so heavy.

We are where we are as a band today because we always work hard. We never turned down an opportunity to play no matter how big or how small. We made every show our best and never say no to a fan.

And where did you get the name, 'Clockwork'?

The name issue was a very long process. We are all very picky and took months to decide a name (even playing gigs nameless). After we heard Clockwork being said, we knew that that’s the one.

How do you describe your sound?

We are a rock trio; sort of. With a very vast array of influences we combine a lot of different styles and make our own tailored sound. Our influences are Dave Matthews Band, Muse, Rush, Radiohead, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine and the John Mayer trio.

What is the most rewarding part of playing music, for you?

The best thing about being in a band is being able to make music with the same people on a daily basis. Once you get to know a musician, it's so easy to create and make music.

So far, what's the best memory you have as a band?

Our biggest moment was when we went to Nashville, TN to record our first official EP. We have lots of video footage and photos from it for our fans.

As an independent artist, what is the biggest challenge you face?

The biggest challenge is the lack of all ages venues around Halifax. There is really only one, and for a band like us that's all about the live show, it's hard to get our groove on.

So it's good that you found Supernova! How did you get hooked up with their shows?

Supernova emailed us to play at The Pavilion; ever since then it's been great to work with them. I have told many bands to sign up for Supernova because it's great to help an up and coming band.

You've done really well on the Supernova stage... what's your secret to a killer live show?

Our live show consists of us out-doing our last show (which is hard). Don’t be afraid to rock out and show the crowd how much you love the music you are making.

Do you guys have any musical 'mentors'?

Liam: My mentor would be Kurt Cobain, because of the way he could control a crowd with his presence and his lyrical approach.

Joey: My mentor would be Steve Jordon, because of his simple style but over the top groove. Nothing beats an amazing back beat that a bass player like Joey can play over.

Aidan: My mentor is Dom Howard, because his drumming ideas are structured and progressive.

So on that note... is there such a thing as BAD music?

There is no such thing as bad music per se; everyone has their own taste and style but some people would be better off choosing a different path…

Anything else we should know about Clockwork?

We can create our own sound with only 3 people. We always go 100% and because of that, we can get more than ourselves in to our music. We are constantly writing and recording as a band. Every time we jam something, we lay it down; we make new songs almost every time we jam.

We can't wait to hear more from this original Alternative Rock trio... until then, you can hear more from Clockwork on the band's Supernova profile. Don't forget to leave the band a comment to let them know what you think!

If you're in the area, your next chance to see Clockwork LIVE will be Thursday, February 23rd at the Sackville Kinsmen Centre, Halifax. We also hope to have them back to the Supernova stage with new music very soon!
