Strawman is a 3-piece alternative rock band from Toronto who originally met in the pages of NOW magazine. Proof that some people are meant to play together, this trio found its groove in their complimentary talents… including the anarchistic style of their drummer, passionate guitar work, and a combined, collectively unique sound. The simplest way to describe their music would be progressive, mainly driven by heavy lyrics and coordinated surges of hard rock energy.
Strawman hit the Supernova stage this past summer for the Road to ExFest at Toronto’s Sound Academy. Despite heavy competition, the band won the fan-voted Wildcard prize for their unique sound and hard-hitting performance. Since then, the band has been working on new music and has just released the first new single Locked Doors (performed live above).
We grabbed an interview with Strawman before the new single came out; and now you’ll know all about these up-and-comers when they hit the stage in 2012!
Introducing Strawman:
JP - lyricist, bassist, vocalist
Joe - guitarist
Duff - anarchist (and plays drums)
So you've been together for almost 5 years; what is the history behind Strawman?
Duff answered an ad in NOW years ago, and we've been having fun ever since.
Hah - ok, then how would you describe your sound?
We describe it as 'DE-PROG-RAMMING ROCK' - our sound is prog and alternative influenced while the lyrics aim to undo the damage done to the listener by endless propaganda.
What is your most memorable moment (so far) as a band?
Having total strangers come up to us after a show to tell us how much they loved it.
How did your band find Supernova.com?
Supernova runs some of the biggest shows, so if you want in, join up.
What do you see as the biggest challenge facing 'new' artists?
Breaking into the machine.
Is there such a thing as 'bad' music?
Deciding if music is bad is subjective - the latest batch of teenie-bop superstars seem to have a knack for making bad music.
What would be your band's 'motto' for a great show?
Give it all on stage - and don't forget to bribe the sound and lighting crew.
Hah.. Anything else that fans should look forward to?
Where possible, we incorporate a slideshow in to our live show, replete with subliminal 'reminders' to complement our songs.

Strawman is in the process of putting out some INCREDIBLE new tracks, including the latest Locked Doors and lots more to come. We hope to see this band back on the big stage this summer, but in the meantime feel free to check them out on Supernova and leave a comment for the artists!
