Home By Eleven is an alternative rock group from Barrie, Ontario who has come to dominate the Supernova competitive stage. All of the five members share a common passion for eclectic music, helping to bring a diverse mix of influences and inspiration to their music. Home By Eleven has created some solid original compositions and with their relaxed open mic approach to performing, it is easy to see why fans quickly fall in to this band’s groove.
With influences like Oasis and Rush, Home By Eleven demonstrates a similarly strong modern rock structure, accented with unique vocals and percussion. This has helped to earn the band a loyal following not only in their hometown, but also in Toronto and beyond. They first joined Supernova’s stage for Band on the Run 2011 and returned to win 1st place at the Road to ExFest Barrie, and 2nd place in Kitchener.
On the back of these winning performances, Home By Eleven was invited to the Toronto El Mocambo Showdown stage and Summer Meltdown series, where they again grabbed 2nd place. Most recently, the band rocked the Sound Academy crowd at the HYSTERIA Finals and with their collective wins, they've won enough recording time to lay down several new tracks.
Home By Eleven continues to push through a busy 2012, with upcoming gigs in both Barrie and Toronto – including February 12th at Mansion NightClub! We were lucky to grab an interview with these hard working musicians, just in time to introduce all the new fans to the members of the band.
Introducing Home By Eleven:
Mark Daunt is the drummer.
Keegan Boldin is the lead guitarist.
Megan Baillie is lead vocals.
Jordan Creamer is rhythm guitar.
Nick Kauldhar is the bass player.
So how did your band come to be?
We got the name from Mark Daunt, he came up with the name Home By Eleven and everyone loves the name, from members of the band and fans alike. The band originally started as a Beatles Tribute band; 1.5 years ago as we were asked to play in Orillia at Beatles Mania.
After that show we decided to stay together as a band and started practicing our favorite songs . We began playing various locations like Celebrate Barrie, coffee houses and school events, and most of all the fun we have had playing with Supernova.
During the summer two of our original band members went their own way, and we reformed the new Home By Eleven with our three new members. This has been a very successful transition into the band it is today. We have new great originals songs being written at an alarming rate.
And how would you describe your music?
We would be classified as an alternative rock and classic rock band.
For you, what is the most rewarding thing about being in a band?
The most rewarding thing about the band is the friendship, musicianship of the members of the band with their creative minds always working on the next original.
Do you have any mentors in music?
We have many idols too many to mention, I think that a we take a bit from here and there. Neal Peart, Neal Schon, Synester Gates, Randy Rhoads, Mike Potnoy, Jim Riley, Josh Ransey, Amy Winehouse, Haley Williams, John Entwhistle and Jalo Pastorious to mention a few.
So far, what's your most memorable moment as a band?
The most memorable moment as a band so far has been playing the Supernova gigs in Kitchener at the Chrysalids Theatre. We got to spend hours behind the scenes and made great friends with members of the band Invain... it was a great night. The other great moment was doing the Supernova gig in Barrie at the Mansion Night Club - the audience was in great spirits and were cheering us on.
How did your band find Supernova.com? What would you tell other bands about it?
We must admitt that Mark's mom found the website, and she began marketing us and began doing websites for us. She started booking shows and event for us to play. Then the real work began, working on new songs and selling tons of tickets for the shows. We have had a great time at all the shows and everyone that we have worked with from staff, to bar owners to the fans that came out to support us have been wonderful. As a band, the exposure that you get with Supernova is amazing and you will not be disappointed with the results.
Awesome! So then, what do you find most challenging about being a new artist?
The biggest challenge facing new artists would be to tackle all the requirements you need to succeed: meeting new fans at gigs, playing shows to find new fans, playing venues in new cities, and learning new material and putting on a great show.
What advice would you give to fellow 'indie' artists?
The two pieces of advise we could give to fellow artists is to put on a great show, relax, have fun and soak in the music vibe.
In your minds, is there such a thing as ‘bad’ music?
There is no such thing as bad music, there is a music type for everyone. If you listen with your whole heart there is something to love about every band, weather it's the sound, the lyrics or the look of the band.
Nice. Is there anything else that new listeners should know?
Some unique things about our band is that everyone has equal input into writing music, lyrics. All the original songs that we play have been written by one or more of the members of the band. Each member comes up with their own feel of the musical score that another member brought to the table on the instrument that they play.
