Takedown Frosty is a 3 man “drunk rock” / punk rock band from Ottawa. With clever lyrics and some talented instrumentals, the band has woven a great upbeat energy in to their performance. Though they’re really only dabbling and have yet to release a demo, Takedown Frosty has started to collect a following of fans who love seeing them hit the big stage.
Takedown Frosty first joined Supernova in 2010 and by 2011, they had worked up a set list to bring to competition. They were noticed by several judges when they hit the Rogers Battle of the Bands at the New Capital Music Hall, and have gone on to play a handful of local gigs since then.
We grabbed an interview with the band last year to learn a little more about their background, and what inspired their music. As this young band works to get their music heard beyond the garage, it’s a great time to show some support for Takedown Frosty’s edgy style of party tunes.
So to get started, can you tell me about the members of the band?
In the band you have myself (Btak) on bass and lead vocals, on guitar and vocals you have Mike Pugliese, and kickin' it on drums you have Kane Wilkinson. We're a three piece so we rely heavily on each other. We have tons of nicknames for each other, but the main ones are
Bosche (on days when Mike wears white to band practice) and Skippy (Kane).
What got you where you stand as a band today?
Well Mike and myself (Btak) were in a previous band before that disbanded, but Takedown Frosty really started when Kane and I got together with another friend to practice a song for an assembly, we later jammed on it with Mike after deciding we wanted to make a band and it just sorta clicked.
The name came to us when we were sitting at Wendy's and the name Takedown Blue was mentioned, blue didn't fit so we looked at what we were eating and put the two together. Haha well we haven't gotten too far yet but to get here took practice and creativeness
to write and develop our songs, sound and band as a whole.
How would you describe your band’s sound?
We have a rock/ punk sound and mainly play up-beat, party to music.
What is the most rewarding thing about being in a band?
Playing shows, we each love to be on stage and entertain people with our music and antics.
Was there any particular moment that made you want to pursue music full time?
Btak: Seeing the bands that I love playing their music live influenced me a great deal, because I want to be in their position and play for thousands of fans!
What is the biggest challenge for new artists, in your opinion?
Btak: The biggest challenge I find is that it's really hard to stand out. New bands have to have a distinct sound and it's not always easy to find. As well, Ottawa is not the town to make it big in, it's all business people around here, they're just not in the music business.
How did your band find Supernova.com?
Btak: Mike and I knew about Supernova from our previous band. Supernova's a good place to start if you are unsure on how to book shows, and you get to meet other local bands whom you could organize your own shows with.
What would be your rules for playing a great show?
We're not really sure. We like to have fun on stage and usually make fun of each other somehow or break into a Destiny's Child song during one of our songs haha.
What other artists do you look up to?
We each have VERY different tastes in music so we each look up to different artists...
Btak: Dir en Grey and Versailles are my inspiration. I listen to so many genres, I look up to and respect a lot of artists.
Mike: The Who, Black Sabbath, The Ramones and lots of classic rock.
Kane: I've always loved to influence my music through the Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party and the Fall of Troy.
Is there such a thing as ‘bad’ music?
Kane: No. Music can come in different ways and it's still music and as long as it makes some sense, its good. There's just bad artists.
Btak: Crappy artists make crappy music.
Anything else thatnew listeners should know?
Btak: We're an entertaining band, we want you to have fun at our shows, sing along, and jump around.
Kane: Raw punk sound, behind melodic guitars with a garage band sound that seeps through nicely.
