My band has made it when...

Introducing Lone Star Cafe

Lone Star Cafe is a rock, blues, alternative band from the Kitchener, Ontario area. Striving for original, gutsy, passionate music, the band has come to gather a solid following in the local music scene. This 3-man outfit has a deep sound that can really fill up and drive a room; even better, they come off with a great attitude that has really paid off in terms of fan support.

These soulful musicians first hit the Supernova stage for the Band on the Run last summer, earning themselves an exposure prize and plenty of attention from the judges. They next returned to rock the Road to CMW and hit the stage amidst some of their top local talent. Despite not coming up with the win, Lone Star Cafe put on a solid performance and left their fans primed and ready for new music.

We grabbed a quick interview with the members of Lone Star Cafe to chat about their Supernova showing and their background in music... get to know this talented trio below!

Lone Star Cafe is...

Matt Woodley - Drums

Jay Snider - Bass

Rich Gowman - Guitar and vocals

So tell me a little about how you guys got together as a band?

Matt and Jay played together for a few years before we got together, back in the early 1990s. Then, Matt and Rich got together to get a Texas Blues thing happening, and after about 1 year together, Jay came along for the ride. We started to write songs, and were all ready to start doing mini tours when life came along, and we took some time off.

We got back together mid 2011, started jamming and got the groove back right away. We got our name after writing the lyrics for one of Rich's favourite original songs, "Lone Star Cafe", and we all decided that was a good name for the band. We are a part-time band at this point, with a recorded album getting prepared to be released, and anticipating playing about 1 show per month. We are ready to start writing more new material, and have many new song ideas.

That's a huge accomplishment! How would you describe your sound?

We are a mix of Texas Blues, the sounds of Jimi Hendrix and various other bits. We try to go outside the box of the blues thing. Lots of groove !!

For you, what is the most rewarding thing about being in a band?

The camaraderie of us, the fun we have playing together, and being able to play with people with this amount of talent. Each member contributes an equal amount, and it never feels like work.

And what has been your best moment as a band?

Coming back together in 2011 after being apart musically, and it all working again.

What is the biggest challenge facing ‘new’ artists, in your opinion?

Good, solid music venues to play, with no hassles !!

How did your band find Supernova.com?

Rich had played an event in early 2011 with another band.

Any advice for fellow 'indie' artists?

Be sure to have fun with it, and love everything you write.

Is there such a thing as ‘bad’ music?

All music is valid, but bad music would be boring music !! Stop trying to put us to sleep !

Haha, fair enough. What final words do you want to leave with new listeners?

We simply offer amazing talent, mixed with songs that are outside the box of the normal stuff you hear all the time.
