My band has made it when...

Introducing The Mandates

The Mandates are a Folk, Rock, Country duo from London, Ontario.

The Mandates hit the Supernova stage with full force in February of 2012 for Road to CMW. They put on an amazing show nearly running away with first place and then proved the mettle of their fans by running away with the Wildcard vote after the show!!
Introducing The Mandates:

  • Paul Wiper – Vocals and Guitar
  • Tim Cowl – Guitar and Vocals

How did you get your band name and what brought you guys together as a band?

After work we would jam on Tim's back deck and it began to turn into a weekly event. Our wives began to call the time a "man date". A mandate also means a purpose and this band's purpose is to have our fans empty their bottles to our music.

How long have you two been playing together?

    Just over a year.

If I was to put you on the spot and ask you to define your genre, what would you call it?

We consider ourselves to be Canadian Roots Rock that only an alcoholic could love.

Do you have any major artistic influences?

Our influences range from Bob Dylan, The Band, and The Handsome Family to Gaslight Anthem, Thrice and Offspring.

What is the most rewarding thing about being in a band?

Having people come up to us and tell us that they really enjoyed or identified with something we wrote. Finally, recording our songs so that more people can enjoy them was a big moment. #LasVegasLoser

What is the hardest part about being in a band?

Besides the obvious one of fighting off women, making sure that we stay true to our vision is important to us. We could be a great karaoke/cover act, but we'd rather write our own stuff and sing a few songs that we love.

What would you tell other bands about Supernova?

It's a great opportunity to perform with an eclectic mix of musical acts and see some really talented musicians.

Do you have a motto or recipe foir putting on a good show?

Relax and help the audience have as much fun as we are having.

What is your most memorable moment thus far as a band?

During our first show, our last song was a cover of "Hasn't Hit Me Yes" by Blue Rodeo. Well, this woman gets up in a short skirt about 4 feet from us and starts doing this sexy dance to it, for the duration of the song. We didn't even really think you could dance to that, but you can definitely grind to it. You're welcome Blue Rodeo.

What is the funniest/strangest story that you have had as a band?

Anytime that we get paid to play it seems strange.

If you had your way, where would you be in 2 years?

Opening for one of our favourite bands and taking a summer tour through the Canadian Summer Festival circuit.

In closing, is there anything else that makes your band unique that new listeners should know?

We write songs based on real people, real stories and real experiences, which a lot of people can relate to. As High School teachers we draw a lot of inspiration from our History classrooms and that lends our music an authenticity that our fans like.

I was able to see these guys perform at Norma Jeans and I loved what they brought to the stage. Usually when you see two men and two guitars you are expecting a set full of covers. However, as they say, they played a lot of their own tunes and they definitely had the explanation and inspiration to each song. They bring something different to a stage that you don't see as much these days...a great mixture of talent, song writing and the ability to connect with their crowd in a very real way. Whenever you get a chance, check out The Mandates. They will be on stage at Norma Jeans this Friday! Come by and check it out!
