My band has made it when...

Introducing Hazzard

Hazzard is a metal band from Calgary, AB.

You can check out the band live when they take the stage on January 26th at the New Black for the Industry Showdown finals!.

Please introduce us to Hazzard:

  • Dylan Westendorp – Drums and founder of band
  • Kerry “Kare Bear” Peters – Lead/Rhythm Guitar and Vocals
  • Cole Masiuk - Lead singer and temp bassist
  • Brendan Malycky – Rhythm/Lead Guitar and Vocals

What brought you guys together as a band?

We always thought Hazzard was a cool name and a great name for a thrash metal band, like ours. After Dylan’s old band Forsaken broke up, Brendan and Dylan started jamming together and decided to form a new band. After stumbling across Kerry who blew us away with his originality and style we started the search for a front man. We found Cole on Youtube doing covers of Iron Maiden and thought “he sounds like Bruce Dickenson from Maiden”. His voice has incredible range and power and fits within our sound. Cole is our temp bassist (if you’re a bassist and wants to join, make sure you reach out to the band).

How long have you been playing together with the current lineup?

We have been together for 4 to 5 months. Getting ready for shows and the studio!

If I was to put you on the spot and ask you to define your genre, what would you call it?

We are thrash metal but we love to play with melodic sections in our songs so we’d say we are Melodic Thrash Metal

Do you have any major artistic influences?

We do! Our main influences include Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, Havok, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Testament, Exodus and many more…

What is the most rewarding thing about being in a band?

The most awarding thing is probably just being able to make music. We love what we do and we intend on doing it until the day we die!

What is the hardest part about being in a band?

The hardest thing about being in a band is definitely getting signed or noticed, we’re in competition with main stream garbage and that’s basically all that this generation listens too. It’s very difficult to get out there as a metal band now a days.

How did you come across Supernova.com and what would you tell other artists about Supernova?

My friend told us about it. I think it’s a very good promoter for youth bands because it’s insanely hard to get a gig without being older than 18.

Do you have a motto or tradition for putting on a good show?

Our motto is we don’t care what people think, we play what we want, and we do what we want. The way we put on a good show is to think of what our influences did on stage!

What is your most memorable moment thus far as a band?

Getting in touch with a famous record producer Mike Fraser who produced Metallia, ACDC, Aerosmith, and so on> He really liked our sound and tell him when we have an MP3 demo ready, which will be January 2013 !

What is the funniest story/strangest experience that you have had as a band?

The funniest thing would probably be the way Kerry joined the band. He posted a guitar lesson ad on Kijiji. A year prior to Kerry joining though, he and Brendan jammed together, not that funny but we think it was ironic.

If you had your way, where would you be in 2 years?

We personally would love to be signed to Capitol Records or Electra Records it’s our number 1 goal to be signed to a major label and tour around Europe and Australia. We want to take this world over and become one of the best metal bands ever, what band doesn’t?

In closing, is there anything else that makes your band unique that new listeners should know?

Our attitude, we have such a driving force towards our music we want to be out there touring and we’re not going to stop until our goals are met. We love what we do and no one is going to tell us otherwise. So get ready for us we'll be hitting the stage on January 26th at The New Black For Music and Arts and also the studio in mid January!
