Show Review: Arch Enemy and Machinehead

September 28th, 2007: The Opera House, Toronto

Frankly I went to see the show primarily because of Arch Enemy, I have been their fan for a while and have most of their CDs. I had “Davidian” by Machinehead and figured that this bill was a sin to miss. Of corse the show got sold out in a matter of weeks, so it took me a lot of effort pulling a lot of strings to be able to get a ticket without the intervention of our friendly scalpers that wanted $100 per ticket. I missed the opening acts Throwdown and Sanctity because of all that mess, but I saw Sanctity before and I haven’t heard enough of Throwdown to be too upset.

I arrived exactly as Arch Enemy was about to start. The band put up an amazing performance, played every tune I wanted to hear, I felt great. This is one band that didn’t disappoint in any aspect of the show – stage presence, performance, everything just flawless. I’ve seen quite a few European bands over the summer and noone was even close to impressing me as much as Arch Enemy did.

Machinehead was about to take stage. Crazy lines for the smoking section, bars, merch area pretty much made me just wait inside. I took up a spot besides the sound guy at one of the staircases that lead to the bottom level. This way I had a perfect vie because I was elevated above the crowd yet I could reach the bar without much effort. After a few minutes the band walked on stage and the sold-out Opera House just exploded. I don’t remember the last time I felt that building shake. Hundreds of fists in the air people screaming Machine Fuckin Head, people in the mosh area waiting to lay and/or receive a good beating. Lights Out, seconds of anticipation and suddenly the place blew up with sounds of Metal. I thought that after seeing guys like Testament, Megadeth and Mudvayne it will be hard to impress me, but I was in for a big surprise. What I saw out of this band I cannot describe. The sound, lights, energy was so perfect I almost cried. This was hands down the best performance ever. I was situated so perfectly to see every second of the performance. The energy coming from the stage could move a few mountains. The size of some folks in the moshpit made me re-think my previous urge to join there and I am not a small guy by any standard.

I can easily say without a doubt in my mind that what I saw that night was worth every penny and I would recommend anyone who loves Metal not to miss these bands next time they come around. You will not be disappointed, I promise you.
