Review by Jen Bagnall Top Music Week January 14th: Charge The Gates
Originality: 3.5/5 Song Writing: 3/5 Image: 2.5/5
Total: 9/15
Charge the Gates is a rising metalcore band formulated in Whitby, Ontario consisting of five energetic musicians: Jason, Kyle, Tom, Rory, and Nick. They’ve come together to share their love of music, and to create a powerful sound. Jason demonstrates dominating vocals, very mature for his age.
The Perfect Lie has a very clean tone; however, I noticed a relatively basic layout. It reminded me of a generic metalcore band at several points; although, there were some aspects of the song that I especially enjoyed. (For instance, a clean guitar fading into distortion.) It was unexpected, and seemed to flow well in the piece. I would have hoped to see a short description of the song, or the lyrics to allow me to examine the thought process behind it more clearly.
Charge the Gates struck me as an interesting band, full of energy merely from their main photograph. Unfortunately, that was the only picture of the band, where a few of the members were out of focus. I would recommend them to formulate a longer biography, and include a list of influences, similar to that of their alternate pages.
Even though Charge the Gates is a relatively young band, they are clearly successful already. I would advise for them to continue making music, in order to reach their full potential.
Keep up the great work, making a name for our small town.
Jen's Pick: The Escape Mode
Originality: 4.5/5 Song Writing: 5/5 Image: 5/5
Total: 14.5/15
The Escape Mode is an entertaining, and experienced quartet derived from Canada’s capital, Ottawa. They have a love for Alternative Rock, and produce exceptional work for their category; accompanied by Dan’s distinctive vocals. Incorporating an occasional cord progression with their interesting instrumentals may also add something unique to the composition. Their pictures posted from their performances displayed their energy and gave some insight to their personalities. They project a professional manner in their song writing, and method of presenting themselves to the public. There is evidence of thought behind their description of themselves, and their past experience.
They seem to have great admiration for music, and their fans. In an interview, The Escape Mode’s drummer, Felix expressed their goal of putting on performances that provide a long lasting impression. They plan on achieving this by adding jams, or new parts to their songs, to make it memorable for the audience.
Presently, they have completed eleven tracks for their full-length album, Slanted Point of View. The Escape Mode has already gathered a large following from their shows, including opening for IllScarlett, Faber Drive and Priestess. Their song, Hollow Shell is even accessible for requests on the radio station live 88.5. With their great dynamics, I believe that The Escape Mode will continue to have a successful future, and provide a long lasting impression like they did with me.
