Top Music Week Charts of February 11th: GIRAGIRA.gif

Hello All!

I’m here two review two bands this week!  One is the electro-pop GIRAGIRA.gif, where the other musical act will be playing two different shows in two different cities this Saturday (February 16) night.  The first show at REDPIPE.CA OUT OF THE GARAGE Southern Ontario FINALS!  Then right after they rock The Sound Academy they’ll be driving off to London (Ontario!) to play at The University of Western Ontario!  This band is none other then The Basis!

Although, I’ll start things off by reviewing GIRAGIRA.gif

Originality (4.5/5)
The band plays trippie techno/electro/pop, which is different, and they get originality points for that!  The band gears up for a performance by visiting their local Value Village to get attire that they’ll destroy at any one of their shows.  Lads, when playing in Toronto, Village like hotspots are Kensington Market and Honest Ed’s, go nuts there, just do me a favour and don’t dress in drag.  Unless if you’re Bon Scott.

Song Writing (3/5)
The band itself states that writing lyrics are the hardest part.  Although in the electro-pop world that you guys live in, lyrics don’t have to be Lennon-worthy.  Lyrics in electro-pop can be as redundant as the beat if need be.

Image (how band presents / markets itself) (5/5)
The band has a very good gimmick.  May I just make a recommendation to pick one attire and stick to it!  Otherwise your fans will not know who you guys are.  It’s like the people in Slipknot switching masks after each performance.

Band’s total rating = 12.5/15

Next Steps
Tour.  Until the world knows your name, your mission isn’t complete.

Ali's Pick: The Basis

Now moving on to The Basis!

Originality (4.5/5)
The band plays rock and roll with a pop touch.  Not the kind of pop that makes your teeth all sugary, but the kind of pop, that modestly nods your head.  Take Velvet Revolver (minus the years of substance abuse) and mix in a little bit of The Offspring, and you’ve got The Basis!  The band usually covers one well-known song a set.  I’ve had the opportunity to catch them twice, first was “Whole Lotta Love” (Zeppelin) and the second was “Free Bird” (Skynard), both songs were played perfectly… and that’s saying something!

Song Writing (4.5/5)
The band has songs that we can all relate to such as “Sleeping In” or “She’s So Damn Boring” (not all the ladies of course ;)).  Personally a good song writer is a person who can write songs that people can relate to, and The Basis do that!

Image (5/5)
The band does a fairly good job maintaining a prestigious image.  With a Supernova page up and running, as well as a pro-done website (thebasismusic.com), this band has the image to be a candidate to play at The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern.

Band’s total rating = 14/15

Next Steps
Double set on Saturday is huge.  Make sure you guys save your energy for the London show, but remember there is high competition at the REDPIPE.CA OUT OF THE GARAGE Southern Ontario FINALS. Several other great bands will be dishing it out to be the top band, including last years champions Theory : Astray!

Peace, Love, Rock N’ Roll!
