Harvard Is My Safety
Harvard is my Safety was formed originally when singer/guitar player Genna Conant decided to form a band with former Bassist Megan MacKay. They then coerced their friend Robert Meiklejohn if he would help them out and, due to the fact that he could not play any instruments, he agreed to help them with organizing shows, promotion, and such.
After a few months, they asked if their friend Johnny Marzo could play drums. And Marzo, who had been playing drums almost his whole life, agreed.
After a somewhat long search for the right guitar player, Maxx Mancuso, a summer camp friend of Conant's, asked if he could take on the role.
As far as deciding on a name Conant and Mackay first thought of "Checker13" but, according to Rob, "They decided it was pointless."
After watching the movie Rushmore they were flipping through the chapter selection and noticed that one of the scenes was called "Harvard is my Safety." They both liked it, so the name stuck.
The band is influenced by everything from Motion City Soundtrack to Blessthefall. The band could be classified in the pop-punk genre, but with metal guitar riffs and ska-like vocals.
HIMS has played 2 shows as a full band, and after their first one on March 1st at the Reverb, Meiklejohn joined the band as a synth player. They played their second show at the El Mocambo on April 4th and won the advancement to the Band on the Run City Finals.
Following the El Mocambo show, Mackay decided to leave due to conflict within the band. After a few hours of worry, best friend/”manager” Sarah Tomlinson saved the day by finding a temporary replacement bassist, Jack Ewing. He came to the rescue, and the band ended up playing the City Finals at the Kathedral May 9th 2008.
Harvard is my Safety has decided to take some time off from playing live shows to write and record enough to release a demo, which should be out sometime this year.
