Wed. June 18, 2008
Author: Sarah Ng
On April 6th, 2008, Armor for Sleep took the stage along with about fifty other bands at the first ever Bamboozle LeftFestival in Irvine, California. After Armor For Sleep’s set on theNowWhat.com stage and a brief lunch, the band’s bassist, AnthonyDilonno, stopped by for a quick interview about everything from hisfirst concert to P.J. DeCicco’s, their guitarist’s, low alcoholtolerance.
Kristen Reed (Me): First of all, if Williamsburg is basically “hippsterville” then what city do you think is the anti-Williamsburg?
Anthony Dilonno: Portland…I’d have to say. Yes, Portland.
Kristen: (Laughing) Nice. Alright. Which band member is the biggest perfectionist musically?
Anthony: Um…We’re all prettymuch perfectionists. I’d say Nash [Breen, drums] live is the biggestperfectionist when we’re performing, but in the studio, we’re allperfectionists.
Kristen: Alright. What’s the first concert you ever went to?
Anthony: It was Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. My dad took me when I was like six.
Kristen: Awesome, and how do you guys keep from getting sick of each other while you’re on tour?
Anthony: We’ve never really hadthat problem. I guess we kind of all have our alone time every [once ina] while, but it’s really easy. We’re all friends. We all love eachother. I’ve never gotten sick of anybody.
Kristen: Well that’s great. Are there any songs that you wish you could take back or maybe change a little that are on your CDs?
Anthony: Um…that’s aninteresting question. Whenever I listen back to one of our records, itwill be out for three months and I’ll be like “Aw man, I wish I didthat”, but I never seriously say it. I think I’m pretty happy withwhatever we’ve done before.
Kristen: Is playing and writing music still an escape for you guys now that it’s a career, or is it more stressful for you now?
Anthony: It’s both. Right nowsince we just came out with a record, we’re just hanging out, writingwhen we can. When it’s time to record, if we need another song or twoit can be a little stressful, but right now we’re just hanging out andwriting what we want to hear.
Kristen: What in your opinion are the components of the perfect song?
Anthony: I don’t really think there’s such thing as the perfect song.
Kristen: Would you have a songthat’s really polished and produced and was number one on the charts ora song that was really original and was completely y’all’s but wasn’treally popular in the mainstream crowd?
Anthony: Um…that’s a goodquestion too. I’d say I’d like a combination of both. I’d love to haveour integrity, but I’d also like a lot of people to hear [our music].
Kristen: Alright…If you woke up tomorrow and you were a woman, would you be gay, straight, or bi? Anthony: Well, it’s hard to put myself in that position, but I like women so I guess I’d be gay if I was a woman.
Kristen: What are some up-and-coming or unsigned bands that you’re into right now?
Anthony: I’m not sure aboutunsigned, but [I like] A Cursive Memory. We’re on tour with them now,and they’re really good. They’re awesome. We love touring with them andwe love hanging out with them, and I know they have a record out now,but they played us some of their new stuff, and it’s really good.
Kristen: Who has the lowest alcohol tolerance in the band?
Anthony: Geez…Anyone besides me. (Both laughing) Um…maybe P.J. [DeCicco, guitar].
Kristen: With digital musicsales becoming more popular, do you think that CDs will eventuallybecome obsolete or become collector’s items like vinyl records are now?
Anthony: Yes.
Kristen: Alright. Let’s see…If you could take music lessons from anyone living or dead, who would you pick?
Anthony: That’s a good question. Give me a minute. Ah…David Gilmour from Pink Floyd.
Kristen: Awesome. What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done on stage?
Anthony: I fell today (bothlaughing). I fell on stage today. It was great. I wasn’t reallyembarrassed though, but I guess that would be it.
Kristen: What’s some advice that you have for up-and-coming bands right now?
Anthony: Be ready to compete.
Kristen: (Both laughing) What’s a message that you guys want to get out to your fans through the music?
Anthony: Well, our songs relateto people in different ways. You can take what meaning out of them youwant. We have a reason for writing them, but you may have anotherreason to like them, so I think we kind of want to do the opposite of[telling] fans what we want from them. They can take whatever they wantfrom us.
Kristen: Well, thanks for the interview, and have a great day!
Anthony: Thank you very much!
