The Estatics are the Wildcard Winners of the Band On The Run, Battle of the Bands® event at the Sound Academy in Toronto, ON! Their prize is a featured article right here on Supernova.com. Enjoy!

1. Introduce your members and how each person fits into the band!
Dakota is the drummer/backup vocalist. He provides comedic relief when things get tense with a glorious array of funny faces, and also a place to rehearse. He is also the most experienced with recording and mixing techniques, so he helps us get rough demos sounding…less rough? Brandon is the guitarist. He contributes by writing a lot of the starting riffs which we use to make the music for our songs. The only other thing he does really is look good onstage. Cody is the bassist and lyrical mastermind. He writes mostly about car crashes, drowning in liquid candy canes and floating on pink inner-tubes. Acacia is the lead singer and wows audiences with her crazy Australian accent, array of colorful dresses and knock-knock jokes.

2. Can you give me a general history of the band? A general rundown?
Well, Cody and Brandon were separated at birth and later regrouped coincidentally on a European cruise 2 years ago at a late night mambo. We played together for a few months and after a bunch of unsuccessful drummers, we recruited Dakota because of his geographic proximity. After realizing that Brandon could not sing at all, we decided to scour the town for a lead vocalist. We had two brief stints with some really good vocalists but still felt something was missing. Feeling down on our luck and seemingly desperate for a new voice, we began asking random strangers on the street, ex-convicts and senior citizens. After escaping jail for the harassment, Dakota suggested getting one of his sword fighting buddies to sing along to a few songs. With no prior singing experience whatsoever, Acacia came along to a few practices and impressed us all. Since we had already written the majority of our songs, all we had to do was teach her them and rehearse. We played our first show in April of this year in Cambridge with a bunch of screaming bands, billed as ‘The Elastics’. Needless to say we got jumped post-show.

3. What's been the most rewarding experience about being in the band?
Being able to entertain our friends and anyone else who happens to like us.

4. Was there a moment, a show, a piece of good news, or anything, when you realized that the band was something that you wanted to pursue full time?
We had all been interested in being in a band full time when we first started. But one experience that made us realize that maybe we had something good going on was when we competed in the city finals show at The Gig Theatre in Kitchener about a month ago and won. It was a real surprise to us because some of the other bands were much better instrumentally and had a lot more experience.

5. What do you want people to perceive your band as?
Basically the most un-cocky or arrogant band we can be. We’re not really into pumping up the crowd or insane stage antics. We just want to play our music.

6. Favourite place to play?
Besides our backyard, we really enjoy playing at The Circus Room in Kitchener because of the all round good vibes and closeness to the audience and the Registry Theatre in Kitchener because of its great acoustics.

7. Who would you love to tour with?
Any of our influences. Playing with bands like Sonic Youth, The Strokes, Tokyo Police Club or Metric would be really neat.

8. What are some bands you guys are currently listening to? Any new bands you can introduce us to?
Right now we are really into The Breeders, Explosions in the Sky, Shonen Knife, MGMT, and Tokyo Police Club’s new album. A band you should check out is The Music Box from Waterloo.

9. If you had to choose one album that you had to listen to on repeat for the rest ofyour life, which album would you pick?
In Utero by Nirvana. Besides the amazing songs and variety, we really love the sound they created with Steve Albini’s recording techniques.
