Kaz Piech is a life long musician, who weaves a mastery of the acoustic guitar with mellow vocals to create soul soothing alt rock rhythms. He began his career as a solo act with his 2006 debut album
Unknown Artist which he released independently. Catching the eyes (and ears) of fans in the Vancouver area,
Kaz was invited to compete on the Supernova stage; where he has continued to perform and win over listeners and industry insiders.
Speaking with
Kaz, it's clear that his passion for music and ambition as an artist have been the driving force behind his music. “My family to this day gives me a hard time, because it’s a tough business. Getting gigs can be tough when you’re independent,” says the young artist. However, he feels fortunate to have hooked up with
Supernova.com, “I have played 4 Supernova shows, and have two more coming up on
May 23rd and
June 19th. The people who like me, like a small fan base, will always come out; but there’s always a new audience at these shows and when they hear the song, they go ‘Wow, I really like this!’ – the shows are a great way to expose my music to more people.”
Kaz has gained sizeable recognition in the industry, both through playing live shows and by promoting himself through a band marketing strategy. Kaz’s songs have already landed him several awards, including an Honorable Mention for
Paradise Lost in November 2006, and a nomination for
The International Song of the Year competition judged by Grammy award winning judges. He has also landed a record and distribution deal, but still has no funding for the project.
“ I’m working with the President of Music BC to develop a marketing plan, and have applied for
Factor funding,” says Kaz, absolutely unperturbed by the challenges facing him in the industry. “It’s tough, but I’ve learned to balance making music and business. I can be an artist and also know how to handle my career. It’s about getting exposure, and never giving up. I’ve always wanted to be a rock star.”
Kaz has two additional albums out,
Truthful Melody and
Unbreakable, both of which are
available online. The award winning track
Paradise Lost is an excellent example of the rolling acoustics used in accompaniment to this singer’s smooth vocals. Influenced by iconic singers like Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell, and James Hetfield, you can hear the passion in Kaz’s alt rock vocals.
Fountain of Love is one of his personal favourites, “ …because it just really hits home, and reminds me of a trip I took to Quebec visit a place where people are cured, called
The Fountain of Love – some music is just personal to me.”
Although most of
Kaz Piech’s music is original, he has nothing against performing covers – especially by his favourite artists. He is currently gearing up for two major Supernova.com shows: the
Shure Band on the Run show on May 23rd (alongside
Hello Operator!) and the
Vancouver city finals on June 19th. As an ambitious indie artist, Kaz is excited to have an opportunity to reach new listeners. In the meantime, fans can check him out at
Supernova.com.
