My band has made it when...

Best of Vancouver Seeds 09 - Columbia

5-man 'Universal new rock' brigade Columbia is one of the rising stars of this year's Vancouver Seeds 2009 competition. With their unique blend of blazing guitar licks, harmonic vocals, and sky-high ambition, these boys are winning over both Seeds and Supernova.com listeners; and with over 11,000 hits on their Supernova.com profile this month, this BC band is set to take the Seeds 2009 vote by storm.

10 Out of 10 - Columbia

In interviewing the guys, it's clear that these long-time bandmates are more than ready to rock the new music scene. Columbia has already played all over BC, taking to the stage at Richards on Richards, The Roxy, The Red Room, and The Media Club. Songs like the impossibly catchy '10 out of 10' are instant hits with listeners, and with Columbia's first album, Join Our Ride this talented brigade promises fans: " This is just the start, and we want to bring you with us!"

How does each individual fit into your band?

Kevin vocals – Commander and Chief- Rules with an iron fist

Richard Lead guitar – General- Also knows the master plans

Jacquard bass – Indie music informant

Jason Guitar - Air traffic controller, keeps everything calm and steady.

Joel Drums - Intelligence officer. Knows his music

How would you describe your band’s sound?

Mega, like air planes taking off! We love guitars and make a wall of sound on our album. You can listen to the album 10 times over and still hear a new thing you hadn’t heard before.

What is the most rewarding thing about being in a band?

Playing shows and getting reactions from people listening to the songs. Being able to stay young at heart for way longer than the people around you is the other amazing thing… you don't have to grow up.

Was there any particular moment or event that made you realize you wanted to pursue music full time?

Our first show. Playing your music in front of people, having a great time… Yup that’s it. We’re sticking with this!

Where is your favorite place to play?

We headlined Richards on Richards in Vancouver and from the stage, the people on the second level look like bats… it was so dark all you could see was people's eyes; it was just too cool. Richards on Richards also has an amazing history of bands and a great green room for making trouble.

Who would you most like to tour with?

The Beatles, Muse, Kasabian & MJ if the O2 arenas shows actually happen.

If you had to listen to one album on repeat for the rest of your life, what album would it be and why?

That’s a hard question we all love music so much that one album is impossible to be happy with. First we’d break the CD player (like an iPhone?) then we’d cheat and hum different songs in our heads.

What brought you to the Seeds competition? Is it helping you to get noticed?

We had always thought voting on music was a little odd, because there are so many good bands and it’s a bit of a popularity contest.
But Seeds has a great reputation and we just want as many people exposed to our music as possible. The site is great we have been exposed to a lot more fans of music.

What do you think of Supernova.com? Would you tell other artists about it?

We had heard of it but hadn’t made a profile yet...

Now that we're on here it's like a way better MySpace with people who really care about music not just making colorful profiles. People ask real questions about music and how you make it not what you’re doing tonight.

My Conscience - Columbia

Is there anything else that makes your band unique that new listeners should know?

We are trying to bring “big” music back with big choruses and a stadium sound. Bar rock is great but we just want to push ourselves and make an atmosphere at our concerts. With us it’s not about a dance show on stage with pyro or even about the people in the band; it’s about music and sound- tracking a time in someone’s life. That’s why we have called our first album Join Our Ride ...This is just the start and we want to bring you with us.
