Introducing Turbulence Introducing Turbulence
Having met in grade 7 and gotten noticed in Grade 8 at the school talent show, Turbulence saw their first fan base grow out of school performances. In high school, the name Turbulence was officially adopted by the original members, and they took their talent to the Supernova stage. In early grade 10, after their first big show with Supernova at Playdium, the band won 8 hours of recording time with Epik Productions and decided to polish their sound. Joe joined the band as a new drummer, (“it turned out that he wasn’t half bad for his first time playing!” says Myke) so they kept him. They also did a little internal shuffling,...

Break Your Band Winners On the Shoulders of Giants Start Recording Break Your Band Winners On the Shoulders of Giants Start Recording
After winning the Supernova.com Break Your Band $25,000 development package, young Ottawa hardcore rockers On the Shoulders of Giants were pretty floored. “We’re all in a state of disbelief right now,” was about all the group could say, as they claimed a massive development package geared towards helping them hit the next level in their music. From joining the Supernova series in December and killing the Ottawa finals, On the Shoulders of Giants went on to the judging process, only to be selected as the top band and winners of the MASSIVE grand prize: $25,000 worth of industry services, advice, expertise and opportunities to help...

Since winning 1st place in Supernova’s Band on the Run series this summer, 77Split seem to be quickly gaining new fans and support from the independent music community. Best NXNE Ever ??? Best NXNE Ever ???
The problem with alcohol is that it makes you have too much fun. Maybe it was the beer goggles and 4am last call, or maybe it was just the sheer talent and caliber of the bands, but I am putting this year’s North By North East festival up for best ever. I don’t really want to go into all the bands I saw at NXNE for 2 main reasons: 1. There were some “late nights” and my judgment may have been a little clouded. 2. I think it’s kind of douchey to rhyme off all the bands you may have seen as if to say, “I saw these bands and I had a way better time than you”. It’s so “Toronto”. I do however want to...

NXNE 2010 in Review NXNE 2010 in Review
This year's 7-day NXNE festival saw more than 250,000 fans and over 650 acts, plus a completely sold out inaugural Interactive conference... yeah, it's become a pretty big deal. There's no question, the North-by-Northeast music conference will soon need a bigger boat. This year's conference, although lacking in the star-studded speaking panels of years before, seems to be gaining a foothold on the notoriously slippery 'indie cred' pedestal; in fact, it's cementing itself as the premier gig for any up and coming hopeful independent. Why? Probably because with the amount of financial support...

Organ Thieves Drum Riot: VIDEO Organ Thieves Drum Riot: VIDEO
On June 11, 2010 the Organ Thieves joined the hottest Toronto talent on Supernova.com for the Band on the Run finals at The Sound Academy. Having each experienced Supernova in their teen years, Chuck Coles (lead vocals, guitar), Dave Brownsound (guitar, vocals), Mikesmith (bass), and Matt Worobec (drums) were eager to support young up and coming artists as they hit the Supernova stage. Mid-way through an epic set, Worobec decided to conduct a mini "drum riot", and at the beckoning of Chuck Coles, amateur drummers joined the band on stage for a full scale jam. Check it out in this AWESOME video: Thanks to all the bands who...

Video Dead Terrorize the Bovine Video Dead Terrorize the Bovine
The Video Dead aren’t one of those bands that people go and see; they are a band that you go and experience. Ben will spit beer in to the crowd, probably (hopefully) offend someone in that crowd, and said crowd will hang on his every word and mosh until their limbs fall off. 1:00am on a Wednesday is not a set time that I would normally advise bands to seek, however at the NXNE kick off Juicebox / UO booking agency party, it didn’t seem to matter. The enthusiastic plaid ridden crowd stuck around the whole night and only seemed to get stronger as the night grew older. Once The Video Dead hit the stage it...

The Organ Thieves Hit the Supernova Stage The Organ Thieves Hit the Supernova Stage
With years of experience killing it on stage with bands like Sum 41, Cauterize, and Lucky Number 7, members of The Organ Thieves have all the talent and skill needed to put together one of the more distinctive sounds in new music. Having each experienced Supernova in various bands during their teen years, Chuck Coles (lead vocals, guitar), Dave Brownsound (guitar, vocals), Mikesmith (bass), and Matt Worobec (drums) all see the value (and necessity!) of offering opportunities to young up and coming artists. This is also why The Organ Thieves are giving Supernova.com bands the chance to open for them at a series of shows across...
