Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers

Flying Fox and the Hunter/Gatherers have steadily worked their way into the Winnipeg music scene since their conception at the Canadian Mennonite University in 2005. A couple of years’ incubation has produced a group with the ability to titillate their audiences using a rich palette of musical sounds. Although their musical niche is difficult to describe, these six classically trained musicians draw from jazz, folk, rock, and funk, while maintaining pop sensibilities. At a Flying Fox show the goal is always a high energy performance that brings the crowd to its feet. Their diverse repertoire ranges from sing-along pop songs to adventurous funk-influenced compositions in odd time signatures. This breadth of repertoire makes them appealing to both the sophisticated musician and the less scrutinizing dancer in the crowd. Musical references have been made to Calexico, Hawksley Workman, Weather Report and Beirut in an attempt to define Flying Fox’s eclectic sound.
