The folks behind the up-and-coming indie label Lefse (Neon Indian, Tape Deck Mountain) have recently started a new label. Waaga focuses on instrumental and tough-to-define music. "We started Waaga because there are so many artists that did not fit the budget of Lefse but that we thought were really great," writes co-founder Matt Halverson.
At the moment, the label's roster includes the Denton, Texas one-man projects FUR and Sunnybrook, the Sleep Whale side project Melting Season, and the sometime Calico Horse/Indian Moon member Emily Neveu. Its first release will be the FUR album Witches, out February 23. Emily Neveu's full-length is due March 30.
Waaga is being launched with a free downloadable compilation called, logically enough, Waaga Records Compilation. That's the cover above, and we've got the tracklist, as well as a Zip file of the entire compilation, below.
We've also got a couple of songs from it for your streaming and downloading pleasure. Click directly underneath this paragraph to hear FUR's "Black Castles" (which features Neon Indian frontman Alan Palomo on percussion) and Melting Season's "The Cliffs".
