My name is Roan, I've just turned 15, and I'm in grade 10 at Van Tech Senior Secondary. My parents tell me I've been making music since I was about three years old, when they heard me creating a love song, while sitting on the garden swing.
I've been playing piano for years, and I would always rather make up my own pieces than practice, but I didn’t write lyrics until a year ago when I entered the CBC On The Coast Unplugged, Best High School Singer/Songwriter competition with my song, “The Compromise”. I was thrilled to be named the winner of the contest, and it was an incredible experience. CBC was just so kind and supportive.
Earlier this year I had a chance to work with Veda Hille, through The Cultch, and I wrote “O Sinking Ship” and was able to record it at the Hive Creative Labs, another cool experience.
I’m still playing piano, trombone in my band at school, violin in the strings program, and choir. Not much time for songwriting these days, but I still do whenever I get a chance!
