It seems that in our current time, most new musical groups tend to have
very generalized biographies. It has come to the point where an
ensemble’s bio does not in fact provide an accurate description of what
they are or who they are because everyone writes the same basic thing.
Phrases like: “Every member has a different musical taste and that in
itself provides an interesting twist to our musical style” or “Our band
has an amazing, high-energy live show” or “we make sure that the music
we write is different than most bands and it will make its mark on the
music scene,” seem to be overused by many musical groups and tend to
lose their meaning.
In comparison, it is a lot like explaining to a dating service what you
look for in a person. The qualities that people desire in a romantic
interest are most often “a good sense of humor”, “fun to be around,”
and “physically attractive.” Qualities like these are not even worth
mentioning because everyone looks for these. It is the same sort of
thing when describing what your own band is like.
It is for these reasons that The Certified Gentlemen do not claim to be
anything. They write whatever they feel like writing. It just so
happens that they are heavily influenced by more of the hard rock/metal
style of music, but that does not mean that there is no room for
perhaps a folk song, or a pop song. They believe that music is an art
and just like a painting is used to enhance an otherwise
non-stimulating visual environment, music is there to enhance the
unexciting or absent sounds of everyday life.
With this in mind, what always happens is that the listeners will form
their own opinions on the music, despite what the group’s biography
states. Since this is not only obvious, but also inevitable, it seems
that the first thing that the listeners should do is to listen to the
music, attend the live performances, and develop their own opinions
over time BEFORE The Certified Gentlemen are able to make any accurate
claims about who they are or what they are doing.
