The Woodrunners began like most bands - in a basement. This particular basement belonged to Marc "Ragged Glory" Audet, who along with partners in crime Curis "Lampshade" MacPhee and Craig "Stryker" O'Leary formed the band in 2006. That summer Craig, while on a trip back home to Nova Scotia (Curt is also a bluenoser- Marc is a good Kingston boy), put forth a proposition to an old friend, Shawn "Biff" Purdy, that he relocate to Ottawa and play bass. Shawn arrived that november with bass in hand and rock in his pockets, and the band began working extensively on a bank of songs written mostly by Curt and Marc which showcased their markedly different, yet compellingly complimentary approaches to songwriting and singing. They next made the logical step and took to the bars, playing anywhere and everywhere from open stages to local dives to festivals to beaujolais parties, a bit ragged sometimes, a little loud maybe, sometimes a drunken mess, but sometimes grabbing hold of something and all the while working on the songs and having a hell of a good time. But something was missing.
Enter the nattily attired James Rossiter with candy and a keyboard in his arms and music in his head, and there you have The Woodrunners, five guys who like to play music together.
They would describe their own sound as rootsy, raucous, catchy, loose, and above all fun rock 'n roll music. Countryish sometimes, psych-poppy maybe, or whatever, but fun, and absolutely from the gut and from the heart. The Woodrunners are what you get when a bunch of music geeks actually teach themselves to play and get a band together. Common heroes and current obsessions tossed into a big pot and simmered over many nights of tunes and words. They hope you like the result. The Woodrunners had a blast making these tunes.
