If you were to ask Union Soundtrack (US) how they would describe their music, the response would be "Organic Rock". The term is not so much a sound as it is a process. A process of letting go and thereby allowing the creative spark to flow unimpeded. Guitarist Dan Carlson adds "It's interesting because you are not trying to create something specific yet there is a result". Although abandoning control seems counterproductive the opposite is actually true. The music will ultimately write itself and the songwriters are merely conduits. "We are along for the ride. We strive to create great music so we think in terms of what best serves the song and this can sometimes mean letting go of your favourite part" concludes drummer/bassist Peter Vruwink. The beauty of the writing process is that it is always changing. As the musicians grow and change so does the music. It takes a special dynamic to permit this mechanism to run smoothly and efficiently.
The group's name is indicative of the sound created when the three members come together to write. Indeed there is the challenge of a shared vision but this is where US excels. True inspiration needs to come from a place that is positive, genuine and unimpeded. The basis for this is dependent upon honesty, mutual trust and open communication. The trio utilizes a democratic process when writing and arranging the tunes. Each person is completely free and open to voice their opinions on all aspects of the song while respecting the input of the other two. "There are many times during rehearsals where we discuss the direction of the song, how it makes us feel and how it relates to our lives" recalls vocalist Austin Schumacher. It is a very positive working environment and it was apparent right from the beginning.
US formed in late 2007 when long time writing partners Dan and Pete met up with Austin in Red Deer, Alberta. All three had been part of the music scene for a number of years and when they held their first rehearsal together it was as if all the puzzle pieces fell into place. There was instant chemistry. When Peter and Dan started to play what was to become "Heaven Undone", Austin effortlessly added his melodic interpretation upon the sounds he was hearing. It is rare to find a group that syncs this well together. Each person has a distinct personality but when they add their parts the song becomes something more than any one individual could do alone. Union Soundtrack really is more than the sum of its parts.
